PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alexander Paredao (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jerry Spotwood (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paredao's entrance music is If you want blood - ACDC. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alexander Paredao!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jerry Spotwood!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Eddie Farnsworth and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spotwood drops his hands momentarily and Paredao takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Paredao tries to clinch but Spotwood moves out of range.

Spotwood scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Spotwood wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Paredao, who protects the arm well.

Spotwood is trying to get an arm triangle but Paredao is defending well.
Spotwood happy to just control the position for now.
Spotwood tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Paredao's face as Spotwood controls the position.
Spotwood wants to control but Paredao is keeping him busy.
Spotwood throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Spotwood misses with an attempted head punch from side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Paredao misses with a wild combination.

Spotwood looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Spotwood is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Paredao is not content to let Spotwood control the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Spotwood stops Paredao from getting back to his feet.
Spotwood wants to pass the guard but Paredao is defending well.

Spotwood is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Paredao sees it coming and defends easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Spotwood is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Spotwood trying to control the action but Paredao is working from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Paredao swinging wilding here.
Spotwood avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Spotwood swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Paredao counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Spotwood throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Paredao was covering up waiting for the punch and Spotwood finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Spotwood tries to free his leg and advance position but Paredao is retaining full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Alexander Paredao will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

and Paredao counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Paredao looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Paredao is looking to clinch but Spotwood is avoiding it.
Paredao swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Spotwood counters with a takedown into side control.
Paredao is not content to let Spotwood control the position.

Spotwood tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Spotwood swings around for an armbar but Paredao sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Spotwood's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Paredao throws a strike but Spotwood rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Paredao preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Paredao is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Paredao utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Spotwood controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Paredao wants to get back to his feet but Spotwood is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Spotwood is standing up over Paredao. Paredao looks to escape but Spotwood dives into side control.
Paredao is not content to let Spotwood control the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Spotwood working the strikes but Paredao uses the opportunity to regain half guard.
Spotwood tries to pass the half guard into mount. Paredao knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Spotwood is looking for a kimura but Paredao is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Spotwood to get the leverage.
Paredao wants to get back to his feet.
Spotwood thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Spotwood closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Spotwood working the strikes but Paredao uses the opportunity to regain half guard.

Spotwood is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Paredao doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Spotwood.

Spotwood is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Paredao still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Paredao has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Jerry Spotwood will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Spotwood takes one on the chin but keeps coming.


It looks like Jerry Spotwood has been cut.
Paredao throws a big shot that misses.
Paredao throws a combination that misses

and Spotwood decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Paredao's guard.
Spotwood wants to control from the top but Paredao keeps moving.
Spotwood pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Paredao is keeping the position for now.
Spotwood in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Spotwood trying to control but Paredao is working from the bottom.
Spotwood trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Spotwood is stalling in the full guard.
Paredao keeping moving, preventing Spotwood from controlling successfully.

Spotwood is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Paredao is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Paredao has escaped and now he's on top!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Paredao chips away with some ground and pound.

Paredao stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Paredao misses with a double jab
and Spotwood counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Paredao throws the left hand but Spotwood avoids the punch easily.
Paredao bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Spotwood's head backwards.
Paredao darts in trying to clinch

and Spotwood counters with a nice double leg into guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Paredao keeping moving, preventing Spotwood from controlling successfully.
Spotwood throws a strike but Paredao rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Spotwood looking for a guillotine here but Paredao defends easily.
Spotwood takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Paredao accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Paredao postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Spotwood avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Paredao tries to stand but Spotwood is controlling from the bottom.

Paredao gets to his feet. Spotwood looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Paredao closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Spotwood takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Paredao throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Spotwood counters with a takedown into side control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Spotwood prevents Paredao from escaping the position.
Spotwood lands an elbow.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Alexander Paredao.
I think Paredao has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
