PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Hoyt Jurgensen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bobby Mercer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jurgensen comes to the cage accompanied by Sgt Barry Sadler - Ballad of the Green Beret. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mercer lands a nice hook to Jurgensen's body. Jurgensen takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Jurgensen walks into a straight right hand from Mercer.
Jurgensen throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Jurgensen throws out a token jab with nothing on it.

Mercer tries to keep at a distance but Jurgensen has taken the fight into the clinch.
The referee calls for Jurgensen to work.
Jurgensen misses with a punch on the inside.
Mercer just leaning against Jurgensen, taking a breather.
Mercer is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Mercer wants to break the clinch but can't.
Mercer wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Mercer throws a punch but it's blocked by Jurgensen.
Come on Jurgensen - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Jurgensen lands with a short shot to the head.
Mercer swings wildly with an uppercut but Jurgensen uses good head movement to avoid it.

Mercer is trying to break the clinch but Jurgensen is controlling him.

Mercer breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Bobby Mercer is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
The fighters circle momentarily. Mercer darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Jurgensen lands a nice shot to the body.

Jurgensen slips a straight right by Mercer.
Jurgensen shoots for a takedown but Mercer saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Mercer scores with a nice head shot.

and Mercer counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Jurgensen thinking.
Mercer scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Mercer throws the left hand but Jurgensen avoids the punch easily.
Mercer leaves Jurgensen with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Mercer connects with a nice looking jab.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Jurgensen shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Jurgensen looking to sit in guard and control but Mercer gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Mercer gets to his feet - Jurgensen follows without any prompting.
Jurgensen throws a jab when Mercer was well out of range.
Jurgensen throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Jurgensen misses with a hook.
Jurgensen lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Jurgensen.
Mercer throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Jurgensen stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Jurgensen throws the left hand but Mercer avoids the punch easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Jurgensen changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mercer tries to avoid it but Jurgensen manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mercer to the ground. Mercer escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hoyt Jurgensen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jurgensen is breathing heavily.
Mercer lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Jurgensen walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Jurgensen throws a left and a right that both miss
and Mercer counters with a series of strikes. Jurgensen will be more careful next time no doubt.
Mercer wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Mercer looks to land a combination. Jurgensen sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Mercer works over Jurgensen's head and body with a nice combination.

Jurgensen is rocked!
Jurgensen tries to clinch but Mercer is having none of it.
Oh Jurgensen is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Mercer closes the distance and lands a vicious right hand that drops Jurgensen! Mercer dives in looking to finish! Jurgensen is still trying to defend himself but he's taking too many shots and the referee has no choice but to stop the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Bobby Mercer!
