PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Hawla (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Takeshi Bross (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bross has chosen Arthur Brown - Fire as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. This should be fireworks!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Johnny Hawla!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Takeshi Bross!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Yukihiro Shimada and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hawla defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Bross.
Hawla slips a jab and a cross from Bross.
Hawla shoots and misses

and Bross counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Bross.

Hawla looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Bross got a little sloppy there for a moment and Hawla has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Bross has managed to get both his arms back between Hawla's legs - danger averted.

Bross has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Bross thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Bross drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Bross jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Bross avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hawla is breathing heavily.
Bross passes into half guard.
Hawla controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.

Bross is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hawla is just riding it out for now. Bross eventually gives up the hold.

Bross is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Hawla sees it coming and defends easily.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hawla is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Bross's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Bross's back!
Hawla is landing with strikes from the back.

Bross grimaces as he takes a shot to the body.
Bross can't escape the position.
Hawla lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Hawla.
Bross is trapped and Hawla is scoring with shots to the head and body.

Hawla controls the position.
Bross is in bad spot here.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Hawla is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Bross up.

Hawla is trying to stick to Bross's back but Bross is turning into Hawla. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Hawla's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Bross.
Bross wants to control from the top but Hawla keeps moving.

Hawla thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Bross throws out a leg kick but Hawla moves out of range and Bross only half commits.

and Hawla counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Hawla.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnny Hawla dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

and Bross counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Hawla!
Hawla bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Hawla works over Bross with some ground and pound from guard.
Hawla has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Bross working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hawla doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hawla manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Johnny Hawla overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hawla's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Hawla gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Hawla gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Bross regains guard.

Bross is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Hawla wanted to stand there but Bross had control of the position.

Hawla drops back looking for a leg! Bross is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Bross manages to kick Hawla off! Hawla jumps back into Bross's guard.
Hawla is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Hawla scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Hawla lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Bross has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hawla can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Bross is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Bross looking for a sweep. Not yet Bross, not yet.
Hawla is working Bross over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Bross throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Hawla escapes and throws Bross's legs to the side, diving into side control!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

A close second round but Takeshi Bross will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Hawla looks to clinch

and Bross decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Hawla's guard.
Bross slips nicely into half guard.

Bross is looking for a kimura but Hawla is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Bross to get the leverage.
Hawla has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Bross is working away from the top position though.
Hawla tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Hawla is trying to maintain the position but Bross is very close to passing his half guard.
Hawla slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Hawla will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Bross misses with a low kick.
Hawla shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Bross counters with an inside leg kick.
Bross connects with a solid leg kick.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hawla tries to clinch up

and Bross counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Hawla tries to roll over but Bross keeps him under control.
Hawla throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hawla is trying to get back to full guard.
Bross works his foot free and advances to mount.
Hawla wants to hold on but Bross pushes him away.
Bross pushing the pace here, looking to move to his opponents back and work for a finish.
Hawla manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Bross passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Hawla!

Bross is going olschool here, as he tries to force Hawla to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Hawla shrugs it off.

Takeshi Bross comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Bross has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
