PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Chau Chang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wanderlei Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wanderlei Johnson told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Wanderlei Johnson!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chang lands with an overhand left.
Johnson avoids the head kick by Chang.
Chang works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Nice takedown defense from Johnson. No joy for Chang on that attempt.
Chang connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Nice straight punches there by Chang. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Chang.
Johnson avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Johnson is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Chang will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Johnson avoids the head kick by Chang.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Chang as he avoids it easily.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Johnson.
Chang misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Chang scores with a leg kick.
Chang fails with an attempt to clinch.
Chang tries a head kick but it misses.
Chang is breathing heavily.
Johnson circles away from the clinch attempt.
Chang pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown but Chang shows good takedown defense.
Chau Chang has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wanderlei Johnson.

Johnson uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Chang.
Chang misses with a few strikes there.
Johnson shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Chang counters with a good low kick that Johnson was not able to check.
Johnson fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Chang is looking to clinch.
Johnson shoots in and drives through. Chang sprawls well.
Johnson avoids the head kick by Chang.
Johnson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Chang pinned against the cage. Chang gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Chang throws a right and a left that both miss.
Chang misses with a hook.
Johnson circles away from the clinch attempt.
Chang misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Chang explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.

and Johnson counters with a single leg into guard. Chang didn't expect that.
Johnson wants to control from the top but Chang keeps moving.
Johnson is stalling in the full guard.
Johnson loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

I looks like Johnson might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chang utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Johnson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Johnson forces his way into half guard.
Johnson seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Despite being in the dominant position, Wanderlei Johnson just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Johnson blocks a head kick by Chang.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Johnson misses with a takedown attempt
and Chang counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Chang tries a head kick but it misses.
Johnson looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Chang is fending him off so far but Johnson persists. Nope, Chang circles away and we're back to standing.
Chang shoots and misses

and Johnson counters with a nice double leg into half guard.


Chang is rocked!
Johnson content to control rather than advance.
Oh Chang is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Chang pushes Johnson off looking to stand but Johnson dives back in and keeps control.
Chang seems to have got his legs back now.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Chang is looking to control Johnson's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Chang avoid being mounted?
Johnson seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chang darts in trying to clinch

and Johnson counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Chang's guard now.
Chang is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Johnson is stalling in the full guard.
Johnson wants to pass the guard but Chang is keeping the position.
Chang controls Johnson momentarily but Johnson frees himself.
Johnson controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johnson slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Johnson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Chang is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

and Johnson counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Chang wants to get back to his feet but Johnson is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Chang will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Chang might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Johnson shoots in but no luck this time.
Chau Chang has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wanderlei Johnson.

Chang fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Johnson fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Chang sprawls well initially but Johnson persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Johnson has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wanderlei Johnson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Chang misses with a left hand
and Johnson makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Chang swings widly with a right hand

and Johnson counters by gaining double undehooks. He picks up Chang and carries him across to his own corner. OH, that's a monster slam and Chang is out cold! A brutal end to the fight and credit to Johnson for not following up with any more shots. He recognised that Chang was out. Good sportsmanship.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:09 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Slam). Wanderlei Johnson!
