PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Heath Palmer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Connor Wrighter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Heath Palmer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Connor Wrighter!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Valeri Chadov and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Palmer fails in his attempt to clinch.
The fight stays on the outside here - Palmer looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Nice jab there from Palmer.


It looks like Connor Wrighter has been cut.
Palmer fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Wrighter manages to avoid it.
Nice takedown defense from Palmer. No joy for Wrighter on that attempt.
Wrighter moves in looking to clinch but Palmer pushes him off.
Palmer closes the distance looking to clinch

so Wrighter counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Wrighter is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Wrighter should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Palmer wants to get back to his feet but Wrighter is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Palmer is working an open guard so Wrighter takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Palmer dodges the punch combination from Wrighter.
Palmer looks to clinch

and Wrighter decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Palmer's guard.

Wrighter stops Palmer from standing up.
Wrighter passes Palmer's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Palmer is breathing heavily.
Wrighter not doing much here.
Palmer tries to kick Wrighter off but Wrighter keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Palmer knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Wrighter on the ground.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Palmer is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Wrighter scores with a couple of nice shots.
Wrighter controlling the action here.
I looks like Wrighter might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Wrighter stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Palmer to get to his feet.

Wrighter shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Wrighter slips a nice elbow through Palmer's hands, connecting with Palmer's forehead.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wrighter looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Palmer is trying to stand.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Wrighter passes the guard and advances to mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Palmer really wants to buck Wrighter off and get back to his feet.
Wrighter controlling his opponent.
Palmer is trying to stand but he's just given Wrighter his back.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Wrighter lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Palmer wants to get back to his feet.
Wrighter lands strikes to the head.
Wrighter controlling from the back.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Palmer holding both Wrighter 's hands and preventing any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Connor Wrighter dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Connor Wrighter's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Wrighter pushes Palmer up against the cage in a clinch.
Wrighter tries to score a body lock takedown but Palmer shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Wrighter changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Palmer fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Palmer fakes the leg kick and cracks Wrighter in the body.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Wrighter.
Heath Palmer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Connor Wrighter.

Palmer tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Wrighter counters by clinching up.
Wrighter keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Palmer's efforts to push away.

Wrighter breaks from the clinch.
Wrighter is breathing heavily.
Palmer scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Palmer is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Wrighter on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Palmer. Palmer obviously looking to wear him down.
Palmer lands a high kick!
Wrighter takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.

Palmer moves into the clinch successfully.
Palmer looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Palmer using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Wrighter has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Palmer pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Wrighter. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Palmer lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Wrighter tries to circle away but Palmer has him pinned against the cage.
Palmer has had enough of the clinch but Wrighter keeps him there for the moment.
Palmer wants to get back to striking at distance but Wrighter won't allow it.
Wrighter jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Palmer walks away with a smile on his face. Wrighter gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Palmer scores with a nice body kick.
Palmer moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Palmer closes the distance and clinches.
Wrighter prevents Palmer from breaking the clinch.
Palmer scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Wrighter tries to pull guard but Palmer holds him up against the cage and eventually Wrighter drops back down to his feet.

Palmer manages to break the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wrighter misses with an uppercut. Palmer saw that one coming.
Wrighter takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

The fight stays on the outside here - Palmer looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Palmer throws a right and a left that Wrighter avoids nicely.

A frustrated look appears on Wrighter's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Wrighter has Palmer pressed against the cage, preventing Palmer from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Wrighter tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Palmer just stands there and leans against the cage.

and Wrighter counters with a shoot takedown. Palmer fights it but they end up in guard.
Palmer is looking to stand up but Wrighter isn't so interested in that idea.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Wrighter pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Palmer is keeping the position for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Connor Wrighter's cut.
That's time! Palmer's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!

Wrighter moves into range and clinches up with Palmer.
Wrighter drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Palmer gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Wrighter is working Palmer over against the cage.
Palmer lands a nice knee to the body.
Wrighter is stalling here.

Palmer pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Wrighter takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wrighter shoots in for a takedown but Palmer shows good takedown defense.
Palmer wants to clinch up but Wrighter keeps it at a distance.
Palmer lands with a kick to the temple. Wrighter shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

Palmer tries to clinch there but Wrighter circles away.
Palmer closes the distance but Wrighter moves to the side

and Wrighter counters with a single leg into guard. Palmer didn't expect that.
Palmer wants to stand up but Wrighter is controlling him.

Wrighter controls from within his opponent's guard.

Wrighter gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
A decent looking body kick lands there for Palmer.

Palmer has Wrighter up against the cage in a clinch.
Wrighter digs a right hand into Palmer's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Palmer's gas tank.
Palmer stalling in the clinch but Wrighter improves position.
Wrighter can't find room to land a body shot as Palmer controls the action.
Wrighter prevents Palmer from breaking the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wrighter is working for takedown but Palmer is calmly controlling the position for now.
Heath Palmer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Connor Wrighter.
Palmer has Wrighter pushed against the cage.
Wrighter has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Palmer is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Palmer pushes Wrighter back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Palmer working Wrighter over with knees to the body.
Wrighter takes an elbow to the temple.
Palmer is trying to break the clinch but Wrighter is controlling him.
Wrighter misses with a hook to the ribs.
Palmer is trying to maintain a safe position but Wrighter gets an underhook and turns Palmer into the cage.
Wrighter drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Palmer gets the underhooks and prevents it.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Palmer is looking to break free of the clinch but Wrighter has double underhooks.
Wrighter tries to stall but Palmer uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Palmer breaks from the clinch.
Palmer fails with an attempt to clinch.

Palmer closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Wrighter has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Palmer avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Palmer connects with a nasty looking knee right to Wrighter's face.
Palmer is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Wrighter controlling the action here for a moment.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Heath Palmer.
I think Palmer has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
