PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Andy Maurice (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Idris Omar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Maurice comes to the cage accompanied by Doce Discipulos. Omar has chosen adu-kein scherz as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Andy Maurice!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Idris Omar!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Gwen Towbar and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Omar lands a high kick!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Maurice.
Maurice fails in his attempt to clinch.
Omar throws out a leg kick but Maurice moves out of range and Omar only half commits.
Maurice moves in looking to clinch but Omar pushes him off.
Maurice shoots for a double leg takedown but Omar sprawls well. He's pushed Maurice's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Maurice drives through with a takedown into guard.
Omar is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Maurice prevents Omar from getting back to his feet.
Maurice content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Maurice postures up in Omar's guard and throws a big left but Omar blocks it.
Maurice has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Omar is looking to stand up but Maurice isn't so interested in that idea.
Maurice throws a strike but Omar rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Omar wants to get up but he can't break Maurice's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Maurice manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Maurice wants to clinch.
Maurice misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Maurice shoots in and drives through. Omar sprawls well.

Maurice shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Omar's guard.

Maurice tries to close the distance and clinch up but Omar swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Idris Omar is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Maurice wants to clinch.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Omar.

Maurice shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Maurice showed some decent athleticism there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Omar on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Omar looks like he's trying to stand up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Omar fakes the leg kick and cracks Maurice in the body.
Omar just misses with a punch to the body.

Maurice closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Maurice goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Omar has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Maurice but great work by Omar.
Omar tries to get to his feet but Maurice is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Omar in his guard.
Omar wants to pass the guard but Maurice is keeping the position.

Omar wants to stand but Maurice has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Maurice wriggles free and stands up.
Maurice moves out of range of the body kick from Omar.
Maurice shoots for a double leg takedown but Omar sprawls well. He's pushed Maurice's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Maurice dives in and grabs Omar's left leg, looking for a takedown. Omar pushes down on Maurice's head and hops out.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Maurice fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Omar avoids it really well and circles away.

Maurice closes this distance looking for a takedown but Omar circles away.
Omar scores with a one two! Maurice had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Omar throws a right and a left that both miss.

Maurice drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Omar is looking to reverse the position.

The ground and pound from Maurice seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Omar tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Omar sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Maurice thows a huge punch but Omar dodges it nicely.
Maurice lands with a punch from half guard.
Omar pushes Maurice off looking to stand but Maurice dives back in and keeps control.

Omar is defending against the submission attempts here by Maurice.

Maurice is trying to work for a kimura but Omar is defending well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Omar looks like he's trying to stand up.
Maurice throws a strike but Omar avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Omar wants to stand and escape but Maurice is having none of it.
Omar lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Maurice!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Omar swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Maurice shoots for a takedown but Omar saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Maurice tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Maurice changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Omar tries to avoid it but Maurice manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Omar to the ground. Omar escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A combination from Omar does no damage.
Omar rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Maurice moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Maurice swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Omar finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.

Maurice is trying to stick to Omar's back but Omar is turning into Maurice. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Maurice's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Omar.

It looks like Omar is going to stand back up.
Idris Omar has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Omar is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Omar takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Maurice makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Omar misses with a head kick.
Maurice fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

and Omar counters with a low kick, right behind Maurice 's knee.
Omar throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Maurice.

and Maurice counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Maurice.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Maurice, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
