The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pavanelli slaps away a takedown attempt from Costa, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Costa scores with a hook.

Pavanelli is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Costa's half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pavanelli perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Costa slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Costa is working an open guard so Pavanelli takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Pavanelli fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Costa, pushing him back against the cage.

Pavanelli escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Pavanelli swings for the body but Costa moves out of range.
Pavanelli misses with an uppercut. Costa saw that one coming.
Costa throws a head kick but Pavanelli moves out of range.

Pavanelli lands a right hook to the body.
Pavanelli lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Costa throws a lazy right hand but Pavanelli sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Pavanelli tries to close the distance and clinch up but Costa swats him away and circles back towards the center.

and Pavanelli counters with a nice double leg into side control. Costa won't be happy with that.

Costa is rocked!

Costa has managed to clinch.

Costa pulls Pavanelli into guard.
Costa wants to sweep but no luck.
Costa really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Pavanelli controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Costa is on top in guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Costa postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Costa stands and steps away. Pavanelli gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Costa misses with a takedown attempt - Pavanelli sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Costa avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

so Pavanelli counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Pavanelli gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Costa to score an easy takedown into full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Costa drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Pavanelli manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Costa has Pavanelli in his guard.

Costa working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pavanelli doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Costa is tightening it up a little... Pavanelli has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Pavanelli reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Pavanelli taps out! nice BJJ there by Costa!
