PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Pietari Manninen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Pietari Manninen has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Pietari Manninen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mike Diaz!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Diaz looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Diaz prevents Manninen from improving his position.
Diaz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Manninen keeps working.
Diaz winds up and cracks Manninen with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Diaz connects with a nice short shot to Manninen's temple.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Diaz seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Manninen does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Diaz might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Manninen kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Manninen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Diaz is working away from the top position though.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Manninen tries to close the distance and clinch but Diaz swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Manninen looks to land a body kick but Diaz moved away.
Good leg kick by Diaz there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Diaz changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Manninen looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Manninen explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

Diaz gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Diaz has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Manninen uses from the top position.

Diaz is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

You get the feeling that Manninen really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Diaz takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Mike Diaz showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Diaz tries to score a power double leg takedown but Manninen sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Diaz somewhat.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Manninen. Diaz shrugs it off though.
Pietari Manninen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Manninen throws a sloppy head kick and Diaz moves out of range easily.

Oooh a big shot gets through from Diaz. Many more shots like that and the referee will have to think about stepping in!

Manninen is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Diaz has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Manninen! Can he survive? No! He's out! Diaz gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:23 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Mike Diaz!
