PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Kru Thorne (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shayne Irons (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kru Thorne!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Shayne Irons!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Donatello Bradman and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Irons throws a right and a left that both miss.
Thorne tries a head kick but it misses.
Thorne fails in his attempt to clinch.
Irons throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Thorne throws a combination that misses
and Irons counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Irons scores with a head kick.
Irons throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Thorne decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Irons's guard.
Thorne stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Irons swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Irons is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Irons wants to stand and escape but Thorne is having none of it.

Irons has his hands on Thorne's head, controlling the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Thorne trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Irons throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Irons throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Thorne.
Thorne misses with a takedown attempt

so Irons counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Irons postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Irons is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Thorne looking for a guillotine here but Irons defends easily.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Irons with a flurry of punches that miss.
Thorne not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Thorne is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Irons defends well.
Thorne is breathing heavily.
Irons stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Thorne swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Irons must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Irons makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Thorne trying to control the position.
Thorne trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Thorne trying to keep a closed guard but Irons is proving a slippery customer.
Irons trying to stand up but can't free himself from Thorne's guard.
Irons is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Irons gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Thorne counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Irons keeping moving, preventing Thorne from controlling successfully.

Thorne gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Irons moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Thorne closes the distance but Irons moves to the side
and Irons counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Irons circles away from the clinch attempt.

and Thorne counters with a shoot takedown. Irons fights it but they end up in guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Thorne trying to control the position from guard on top but Irons is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Thorne connects with a couple of short punches.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kru Thorne dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Thorne throws a head kick but Irons moves out of range.
Thorne moves in looking to clinch but Irons pushes him off.
Kru Thorne seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Thorne shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Irons sprawls well. Irons wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Thorne gets slowly back to his feet.
Irons cracks Thorne with an open hand slap.
Irons falls off balance throwing a combination
and Thorne counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Thorne looks for the body kick but Irons saw that one coming.
Thorne fails with a takedown attempt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Thorne wants to clinch up but Irons keeps it at a distance.
Irons misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Kru Thorne is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Irons lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Thorne shoots in for a double leg but Irons sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kru Thorne. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Thorne misses with a takedown attempt
and Irons counters with a one-two to the body.
Thorne throws a front kick aimed at Irons's knee but Irons avoids it well.
Thorne shoots in but no luck this time.

Irons swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Irons tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Thorne tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Irons counters with a straight right hand.
Thorne looks to clinch
and Irons counters with a three punch combo that has Thorne backing up. Thorne nods at Irons to acknowledge the strikes.

and Irons counters with a single leg into guard. Thorne didn't expect that.
Irons passes Thorne's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Irons is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Irons stops Thorne from getting back to his feet.

Irons is trying to work for a kimura but Thorne is defending well.

Irons gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Irons misses with the combination.
Irons throws a left and a right that both miss

and Thorne counters with a nice double leg into side control. Irons won't be happy with that.
Irons sneaks back into half guard.

Thorne is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Irons doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Thorne.
Thorne wants to pass to mount but Irons is defending the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Thorne wants to lay and pray for a moment but Irons keeps working.
Irons moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Thorne looking to sit in guard and control but Irons gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Irons wants to get up but he can't break Thorne's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shayne Irons showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Irons swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Irons moves away from the strike by Thorne.
Thorne fails with the takedown
and Irons counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Thorne is lucky that one didn't land flush.

and Thorne counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Thorne.
Thorne keeps control of Irons as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Irons is trying to break the clinch but Thorne is controlling him.
Irons wants to break the clinch but can't.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Thorne tries to pull guard but Irons won't allow it.
Thorne trying to stall but Irons improves his position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Thorne looks to throw an elbow but misses.
Irons tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Thorne avoiding damage as Irons throws knees to the body.

A knee to the head by Thorne.
Thorne keeps control of Irons as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Irons tries to break free but Thorne pushes him back against the cage.

Thorne pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Thorne throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Irons's waist but Irons gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Thorne off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kru Thorne. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Irons bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Thorne's head backwards.
Thorne with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Irons to score with a decent uppercut.
Thorne wants to clinch
and Irons counters with a low kick, right behind Thorne 's knee.
Thorne fails with the takedown
and Irons counters with a stiff right hand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Irons drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Irons decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Thorne, up you get!
Irons tries to bum rush Thorne with a series of wild strikes but Thorne uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Thorne tries to clinch
and Irons counters with a good, hard body kick but Thorne shrugs it off.
Irons falls off balance throwing a combination

so Thorne counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Thorne wants to control from the top but Irons keeps moving.
Kru Thorne overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Irons trying to control the position.
Irons is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Thorne works his way to full guard. Good work.

Irons stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Thorne throws up his legs and catches Irons in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Irons tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Thorne! That came out of nowhere!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:31 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Kru Thorne!
