PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Derek Shride (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Christopher Gonzaga (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shride comes into the arena with Can't Tell Me Nothin' from Kanye West blaring out of the sound system. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

The judges for this bout are William Gold, Daniel Bishop and Colin Fotheringham.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shride swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Shride throws the kick towards the body but Gonzaga avoids it.
Gonzaga tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Shride paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Gonzaga dives in and grabs Shride's left leg, looking for a takedown. Shride pushes down on Gonzaga's head and hops out.
Shride lands a jab to the head.

It looks like Christopher Gonzaga has been cut.
Shride misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Gonzaga drives through with a takedown into guard.
Shride preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Shride utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Gonzaga in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Gonzaga postures up in Shride's guard and throws a big left but Shride blocks it.
Gonzaga loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Shride pushes Gonzaga off and scrambles back to his feet.
Shride could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Shride tries to bum rush Gonzaga with a series of wild strikes but Gonzaga uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Shride misses with a jab, cross combination.
Shride throws a head kick but Gonzaga moves out of range.
Shride walks forward, straight into a front kick from Gonzaga.
Shride is breathing heavily.
Shride takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Gonzaga forces Shride back against the cage and clinches.
Shride stops a takedown attempt from Gonzaga.

Gonzaga wants the takedown. Shride is fighting it off but Gonzaga persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Shride's guard against the cage.
Gonzaga postures up in Shride's guard and throws a big left but Shride blocks it.

Gonzaga drops back looking for a leg! Shride is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Shride manages to kick Gonzaga off! Gonzaga jumps back into Shride's guard.
Gonzaga postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Gonzaga thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gonzaga scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Gonzaga drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Gonzaga seems to have locked his on tight now - Shride screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Gonzaga, as he picks up the win!
