PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Felipe Lagarto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Fontana (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fontana has chosen Queensryche - Silent Lucidity as his entrance music. Steve Fontana will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Felipe Lagarto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steve Fontana!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Alyssa Summers and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Fontana darts in and clinches Lagarto up against the cage.

Lagarto lands a takedown into guard.
Fontana doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Lagarto throwing strikes but missing.

Lagarto drops back looking for a leg! Fontana is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Fontana manages to kick Lagarto off! Lagarto jumps back into Fontana's guard.
Fontana wants to stand and escape but Lagarto is having none of it.
Fontana is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Lagarto postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Lagarto drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lagarto jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Lagarto wants to control from the top but Fontana keeps moving.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Fontana shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Lagarto as he avoids it easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lagarto keeps the fight on the outside.
Fontana shoots in looking for a takedown. Lagarto tries to sprawl out of it but Fontana keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Lagarto manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Lagarto shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Lagarto was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Lagarto goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Fontana is on top in guard.

Lagarto is looking for a triangle here but Fontana uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Fontana looks up at the clock and then as Lagarto takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Fontana smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Fontana wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lagarto keeps working.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lagarto regains half guard.
Lagarto tries to get to full guard but Fontana has control of the leg.
Fontana takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Lagarto wants to improve his position but Fontana is controlling well.

Lagarto actively working from the bottom here.
Lagarto is breathing heavily.
Fontana drops an elbow to the side of Lagarto's head.
Fontana thows a huge punch but Lagarto dodges it nicely.
Fontana seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Lagarto does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Fontana really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lagarto. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Fontana wants to stand up but Lagarto is controlling the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Fontana moves in looking to clinch but Lagarto pushes him off.

and Fontana decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Lagarto's guard.

Fontana thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Fontana decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Lagarto decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Lagarto is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Fontana is trying to stand up here but Lagarto is controlling him well.

Fontana throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Fontana is looking to stand up but Lagarto isn't so interested in that idea.

Fontana is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Lagarto defends well.

Lagarto got a little sloppy there for a moment and Fontana has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Lagarto has managed to get both his arms back between Fontana's legs - danger averted.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Fontana closes this distance looking for a takedown but Lagarto circles away.

Lagarto changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Fontana looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Fontana is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Lagarto is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Fontana knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

That's time! Lagarto's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Fontana tries to clinch up but Lagarto circles away and keeps his distance.

Lagarto is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Fontana defends it well.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Lagarto is looking for a sweep. Fontana is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Fontana takes the fight into the clinch.
Lagarto is trying to stall.
Come on Fontana - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Fontana is pressed up against the cage. Lagarto has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Fontana down to the mat. Fontana avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Fontana shoots in for a takedown but Lagarto shows good takedown defense.

Lagarto has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Fontana clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Lagarto is controlling the position but Fontana somehow manages to roll and ends up with half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Steve Fontana comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Fontana has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
