PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joe Machini (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robert Brewster (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Brewster comes into a darkened arena with his song building. System of A Down - Chop Suey kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joe Machini!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Robert Brewster!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Brewster drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Brewster trying to control the position from guard on top but Machini is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Brewster wants to pass the guard but Machini is keeping the position.
Machini seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Machini manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Brewster manages to get himself to full guard.
Brewster is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Machini controls from within his opponent's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Brewster lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Machini!

Brewster goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Machini is on top in guard.
Machini looking to pass the guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Brewster is on top in guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Brewster looking to sit in guard and control but Machini gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Brewster is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Brewster is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Brewster lands some strikes from the bottom.
Brewster wants to sweep here but Machini controlling him for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Machini wants to get up but he can't break Brewster's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Machini jabs Brewster right on the nose. Brewster blinks but takes it well.
Machini shoots for a takedown but Brewster saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Machini wants to clinch.
Brewster swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Machini misses with a straight right.
Brewster tries for a takedown but Machini circles away easily
and Machini counters with a low kick, right behind Brewster 's knee.

Brewster looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Machini!

Brewster controlling his opponent.

Machini tries to reverse the position but Brewster maintains control.
Machini is working hard here to advance position.
Machini wants to hold on but Brewster pushes him away.
Brewster can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Machini is looking to escape.

Brewster jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Machini is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Machini and Brewster has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Joe Machini will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Brewster is trying hard to land a takedown here. Machini sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Machini cracks Brewster with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.

Machini is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Brewster's half guard.
Brewster is trying to control but can't.
Machini seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Brewster has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Machini is working away from the top position though.
Machini really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Machini thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Brewster's head.
Machini prevents Brewster from improving his position.

Machini winds up and cracks Brewster with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Machini slips a nice elbow through Brewster's hands, connecting with Brewster's forehead.
Machini seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Brewster does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Brewster gets full guard.

Machini stands up from Brewster's guard - Machini perhaps looking for a knockout.
Brewster takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Joe Machini seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Brewster defending well as Machini loads up on a big left hand.
Horrible takedown by Machini or perhaps it was just good defense by Brewster which made him look bad.
Brewster fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Machini scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Joe Machini is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Brewster is breathing heavily.
Machini looks to throw the jab but Brewster is out of range.
Brewster doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Machini lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Machini is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Machini looks to score with a jab to the body but Brewster is just out of range.
A big left from Machini misses.
Machini tries to clinch but Brewster moves out of range.
Machini shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Brewster counters with a left and a right that stings Machini.
Machini throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Machini catches Brewster with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Brewster dives in and grabs Machini's left leg, looking for a takedown. Machini pushes down on Brewster's head and hops out.
Joe Machini has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Robert Brewster.
Machini throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Brewster on the side of the head.
The fight stays on the outside here - Brewster looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Machini looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Brewster!

Brewster regains half guard.
Machini wants to stand up but Brewster is controlling the position.
Machini seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Brewster does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Brewster wants to improve his position but Machini is controlling well.
Brewster is refusing to be controlled, as Machini sits in half guard.
Brewster tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Machini has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Machini content just to control the position here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Brewster looks to score with a jab to the body but Machini is just out of range.

Machini shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Machini showed some decent athleticism there.
Joe Machini overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Machini wants to stand up but Brewster has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Brewster gets full guard.

Machini gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Machini keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Nice sprawl there from Brewster as Machini shoots in.
Machini shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Brewster sprawls well. Brewster wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Machini gets slowly back to his feet.

Machini uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Brewster.
Brewster takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Machini scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Machini closes this distance looking for a takedown but Brewster circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joe Machini. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Machini is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.

Brewster closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Brewster is working for a submission of some sort.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Brewster connects with a nice short shot to Machini's temple.

Machini is trying to stand.
Machini is not content to let Brewster control the position.
Machini is looking to improve his position.
Machini is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Brewster scores with a couple of nice shots.
Machini is doing well to control the position and prevent Brewster from advancing to side control.

Brewster is stalling here. Machini is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Brewster seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Machini has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

The referee asks Machini politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Machini prefers to stall for the moment though.
Brewster is looking for a sweep.
A lull in the action here as Machini stalls from top position.
Machini is looking to take a break and control but Brewster is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Robert Brewster has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Brewster is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Machini's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Brewster tries to get to full guard but Machini has control of the leg.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Joe Machini.
Well Machini has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
