PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Sosa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Carwin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Carlos Sosa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Shane Carwin!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Chris Downing and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carwin tries for a takedown but Sosa sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Sosa misses with a double jab.
Carlos Sosa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sosa will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Sosa goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Sosa throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Sosa stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sosa wants it to stay on the feet.
Carwin throws a right and a left that Sosa avoids nicely.

and Carwin counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Sosa is not content to let Carwin control the position.
Sosa knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Carwin on the ground.
Carwin wants to stand up but Sosa has a hold of him and won't allow it.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Carwin is trying to control the action in half guard but Sosa is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Sosa is controlling Carwin's position as best he can from this difficult position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Sosa rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Carwin moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Carwin is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Sosa seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shane Carwin dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Carwin tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Sosa paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Sosa looks to land a combination but Carwin avoids it well.
Sosa fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.


It looks like Shane Carwin has been cut.

and Carwin counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Sosa's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Sosa throws a hook to the side of Carwin's head but Carwin sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Sosa rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Carwin moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

and Carwin counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Carwin has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Sosa is proving hard to escape from.

and Carwin counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Sosa looks to throw the jab but Carwin is out of range.

Sosa throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Carwin counters by moving into the clinch.
Carwin is trying to maintain a safe position but Sosa gets an underhook and turns Carwin into the cage.

Sosa breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Horrible takedown by Carwin or perhaps it was just good defense by Sosa which made him look bad.
Sosa connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Sosa throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Sosa scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

and Carwin makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!


No luck with that takedown attempt from Carwin.
Carwin lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.

Carwin shoots for a takedown but Sosa saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Carwin shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Sosa as he jumps to the side.

Sosa throws a right hand that Carwin ducks under and follows up with a left that Carwin also avoids with ease.

Carwin gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Carwin lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Carwin looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

and Carwin counters with a straight right hand.
Carwin gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Sosa.
Sosa is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Sosa works the jab nicely.
Carwin walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Sosa throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Some bone on bone action there as Carwin checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

and Carwin decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Sosa's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sosa is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Carwin is controlling him.

Sosa throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Sosa catches Carwin with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
A left lands for Sosa.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Carlos Sosa.
I think Sosa has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
