PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Andrey Nazarov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Guru Grepp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Guru Grepp told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Andrey Nazarov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Guru Grepp!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Viktor Lagutenko and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nazarov avoids the body shot from Grepp.
Guru Grepp seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Grepp fails with a takedown attempt.

Grepp closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Nazarov sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Nazarov makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Nazarov.

Grepp drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Nazarov manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Grepp has Nazarov in his guard.
Nazarov wants to pass the guard but Grepp is keeping the position.
Nazarov advances to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Nazarov wants to pass the guard but Grepp is defending well.
Nazarov prevents Grepp from improving his position.
Nazarov not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Grepp moves into full guard.
Nazarov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Grepp swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Nazarov forces his way into half guard.

Grepp actively working from the bottom here.
Grepp wants to control but Nazarov is keeping busy and won't allow it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Nazarov is working for a kimura but Grepp is defending it quite comfortably.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Nazarov trying to mount his opponent but Grepp defends it.
Nazarov is trying to control the action in half guard but Grepp is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Nazarov is taking a breather. Grepp says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Nazarov wants to work for an arm triangle but Grepp is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Grepp looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Nazarov is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Grepp doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Nazarov.
Nazarov is breathing heavily.
Grepp regains full guard. Nicely done.
Grepp looking to hit a scissor sweep but Nazarov is one step ahead there.
Nazarov pushes down on Grepp's leg and manages to get into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Nazarov is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Grepp defends it well.
Grepp is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Nazarov's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Nazarov's back!

Grepp looking for the choke but no joy.

Grepp has got his arm under Nazarov's chin working for the choke… has he got it? It looks pretty tight! Oh! Nazarov has spun round into Grepp's guard beautifully! Well done that man!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nazarov trying to control the position from guard on top but Grepp is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andrey Nazarov dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Nazarov keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Grepp fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Nazarov avoids it really well and circles away.
Grepp steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Nazarov.
Nazarov throws a hook to the side of Grepp's head but Grepp sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Nazarov gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Grepp drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Nazarov manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Grepp has Nazarov in his guard.

Nazarov avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Nazarov is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Grepp has his feet on Nazarov's thighs here. He's pushed Nazarov off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Nazarov screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
