PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Havok Merle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jill Leonard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Havok Merle!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jill Leonard!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Ian Loll and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Leonard bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Merle's head.
Leonard dips to his left and cracks Merle with an uppercut!
Nice sprawl there from Leonard as Merle shoots in.
Merle looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Leonard is fending him off so far but Merle persists. Nope, Leonard circles away and we're back to standing.
Leonard throws out a leg kick but Merle moves out of range and Leonard only half commits.
Leonard throws a right and a left that both miss.
Merle fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Leonard avoids it really well and circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Havok Merle. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Good standup being displayed there by Leonard as he connects with a hook.
Merle could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Merle is trying hard to land a takedown here. Leonard sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Leonard gets the takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Leonard lands a nice forearm strike.
Merle throwing some weak shots from the bottom that do no damage.

Leonard decides to stand back up. Leonard steps back and let's Merle get back to his feet.
Havok Merle seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Leonard changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Merle looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Leonard has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Merle regains half guard.
Leonard seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Leonard is working for a submission of some sort.

Merle might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Merle has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Leonard is working away from the top position though.

Merle tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Merle gets caught flat footed, as Leonard shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Leonard drops back looking for a leg! Merle is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Merle manages to kick Leonard off! Leonard jumps back into Merle's guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Leonard works his foot free and advances to mount.
Merle keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Merle in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Merle is in a horrible position here. Leonard smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Leonard avoids the attempt from Merle to control.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jill Leonard dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Merle doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Leonard counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Leonard drops back looking for a leg! Merle is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Merle manages to kick Leonard off! Leonard jumps back into Merle's guard.

Merle blocking the ground and pound attempt from Leonard.
Merle flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Merle is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Leonard's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Leonard's back!
Merle tries to get the hooks in deep but Leonard pushed the leg off.
Merle struggling to land strikes to the head as Leonard covers up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Leonard breaks Merle's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Leonard stands and throws Merle's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Merle is looking to regain half guard here but Leonard keeps moving and retains side control.

Leonard tries for a kimura but Merle is defending well.
Merle prevents Leonard from moving into mount.
Merle is looking to reverse the position.
Merle is working hard here to advance position.

Leonard has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

and Leonard counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Leonard drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Leonard jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Merle looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Merle looking for a guillotine here but Leonard defends easily.
Leonard stands up over Merle, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Leonard decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Leonard slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Leonard connects with a right hand. Merle shakes it off.
Leonard wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Leonard connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Good exchange - Leonard coming out on top.
Merle avoids a low kick by using good footwork.

and Leonard counters with a takedown into side control.
Leonard is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Merle's shoulder. That is not cool.
Leonard lands a few punches from side control.
Merle tries to buck Leonard off but Leonard is having none of it.

Leonard tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Leonard has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Leonard cracks Merle with a big right hand but Merle just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Leonard is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Merle has escaped the position, nice work there.
Merle prevents Leonard from improving position.
The ground and pound from Leonard seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Merle managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Leonard.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Leonard thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Leonard working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Merle throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Leonard checks a leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jill Leonard showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Leonard does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Merle misses with a takedown

and Leonard counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Merle!
Leonard trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Leonard has hold of an arm here, looking to extend it. He's committed to the armbar attempt here! Will he get it?! Yes! Merle is forced to tap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:35 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Jill Leonard!
