PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chuck Pain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ares Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Chuck Pain!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ares Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Shigeki Sano and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Johnson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Pain could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Pain.

Pain bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pain throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Johnson sneaks back into half guard.
Johnson is trying to stand back up but Pain is controlling him
Johnson is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Pain is keen to just control but Johnson is a slippery customer.
Pain is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johnson is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Pain is trying to control but can't.

Johnson stands up and beckons Pain to join him on the feet.
Johnson throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Pain.

Pain gets a takedown into half guard.

Johnson looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Johnson looks like he's trying to stand up.
Pain trying to control from Johnson's half guard. Johnson has other ideas though and has regained full guard.

Pain got a little sloppy there for a moment and Johnson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Pain has managed to get both his arms back between Johnson's legs - danger averted.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Pain looking to sit in guard and control but Johnson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Johnson postures up.
Pain wants to sweep here but Johnson controlling him for the moment.
Johnson postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Johnson seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Johnson slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Johnson is looking to take a break and control but Pain is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Johnson is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ares Johnson dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Johnson gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Pain to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Pain wants to control from the top but Johnson keeps moving.
Johnson is pulling down on Pain's head. It's preventing any offense from Pain, at least for the moment.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johnson trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Johnson is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Johnson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Pain manages to get himself to full guard.
Johnson trying to control but Pain is working from the bottom.
Johnson controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pain looking to control.
Pain keeping moving, preventing Johnson from controlling successfully.
Pain has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Johnson has passed into side control.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Johnson. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Johnson moves into full mount!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pain is squirming around, avoiding Johnson's attempts to control the action.

Despite being in the dominant position, Ares Johnson just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Johnson decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Pain is trying to get back to full guard.
Johnson wants to control but Pain is keeping him busy.
Johnson is breathing heavily.
Pain trying to control from the bottom.
Pain tries to roll over but Johnson keeps him under control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Johnson is trying to control the action in half guard but Pain is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Pain is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pain trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
Johnson tries to control but Pain wriggling away.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Johnson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ares Johnson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Pain's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Johnson shoots for a takedown but Pain saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Pain is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Johnson's half guard.
Johnson tries to kick Pain off but Pain keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Johnson is controlling Pain's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Johnson is looking to control Pain's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Johnson avoid being mounted?
Johnson takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pain keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Johnson is looking for a sweep. Pain is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Johnson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Johnson.
Pain trying to control the position from guard on top but Johnson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pain tries to free his leg and advance position but Johnson is retaining full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Johnson is trying to control the position from the bottom.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Johnson is on top in guard.
Johnson trying to control but Pain is working from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pain looking to hit a scissor sweep but Johnson is one step ahead there.
Pain is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Johnson wants to control from the top but Pain keeps moving.

Johnson is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Johnson works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Johnson wants to pass to mount but Pain is defending the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Johnson goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Chuck Pain is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Pain shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Johnson is not content to let Pain control the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Chuck Pain.
Well Johnson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3 rounds of action, we go to the scorecards for a decision.
