Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Frankie Pep (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yoshihiro Takaya (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Takaya is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Jimi Hendrix - All along the Watchtower. Frankie Pep has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Frankie Pep!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Yoshihiro Takaya!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Ian Loll and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pep throws a big shot that misses.
A jab from Takaya misses.
Takaya connects with a body shot.
Pep misses with a hook. Takaya ducked under it nicely.
Pep tries to close the distance and clinch but Takaya swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Takaya gets the takedown into side control.
An elbow from Takaya crashes against the mat.
Takaya looking to control but instead Pep has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
Pep is trying to get back to full guard.
Pep works his way to full guard. Good work.
Takaya with a flurry of punches that miss.

Pep keeping moving, preventing Takaya from controlling successfully.
Takaya is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Takaya sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Pep's guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Takaya looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Takaya wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pep keeps working.
Takaya is pressing down on Pep's thigh, looking to free his foot. Pep is holding on for now.
Takaya has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Pep wants to improve his position but Takaya is controlling well.
Takaya tries to pass the half guard into mount. Pep knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Takaya looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Pep is fending him off so far but Takaya persists. Nope, Pep circles away and we're back to standing.
Takaya dives in and grabs Pep's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pep pushes down on Takaya's head and hops out.

Pep moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Takaya fails with a takedown attempt.
Frankie Pep has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yoshihiro Takaya.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Takaya is defended easily by Pep.

Pep sets himself and throws a head kick that knocks Takaya to the ground! Pep dives into full mount looking to finish!

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Pep throws a right and a left that both miss.
Takaya throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Takaya misses the body punch

and Pep counters by moving into the clinch.
Pep blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Takaya keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Pep's efforts to push away.
Takaya blocks an uppercut.

Pep's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Pep is squirming around, avoiding Takaya's attempts to control the action.

Pep is in a horrible position here. Takaya smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Pep wants to control but Takaya is having none of it.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Takaya wants to control the pace but Pep is squirming around nicely.
Takaya prevents Pep from getting the reversal.
Pep tries to hold on but Takaya postures up.
Pep is trying to escape the mount.
Takaya controlling his opponent.

BOOM! Takaya connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Takaya wants to control but instead Pep manages to regain half guard.
Takaya is just content to waste time from the top position. Pep takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Pep pulls Takaya in close to his closed guard and prevents Takaya from doing any damage or advancing position.
Takaya loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pep pulls Takaya in close to prevent any damage.
Takaya won't allow Pep to sweep him here.

Yoshihiro Takaya showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Pep lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Takaya is trying to drag Pep to the mat but Pep just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Pep feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Takaya's calf.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Takaya shoots for a double leg takedown but Pep sprawls well. He's pushed Takaya's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Pep is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Takaya's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Takaya's back!

Pep pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Frankie Pep.
I think Pep has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
