PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Griffen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Arturo Caldeira (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Caldeira has chosen Paralyzer as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ryan Griffen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Arturo Caldeira!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Joseph Jones and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Griffen gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Caldeira stands and steps away. Griffen gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Griffen misses with a takedown attempt

and Caldeira decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Griffen's guard.

Griffen has an active guard here but Caldeira has managed to pass into half guard.
Griffen scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Caldeira manages to mount him!
Caldeira takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Griffen really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Griffen is wriggling around trying to escape.

Caldeira tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Griffen is in all sorts of trouble here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Griffen is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
I looks like Caldeira might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Griffen is trying to stand up.
Griffen tries to hold on but Caldeira pushes him away.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Despite being in the dominant position, Arturo Caldeira just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Griffen wants to clinch

and Caldeira counters with a single leg into guard. Griffen didn't expect that.
Griffen looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Caldeira puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Griffen might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Griffen is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Griffen tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Caldeira manages to move to mount!

Caldeira slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Griffen working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Caldeira doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Caldeira manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Griffen will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Griffen throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Griffen throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

and Caldeira counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Caldeira.

Griffen is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Griffen is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Caldeira is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Griffen throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Caldeira escapes and throws Griffen's legs to the side, diving into side control!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Caldeira stands up and beckons Griffen to his feet.

and Caldeira counters with a single leg into guard. Griffen didn't expect that.
Griffen looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Caldeira won't allow Griffen to get back to his feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Caldeira slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Caldeira chips away with some ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Arturo Caldeira showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Griffen tries to get to full guard but Caldeira has control of the leg.

Caldeira remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Griffen is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Caldeira is controlling him well.

Caldeira takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Caldeira working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Griffen has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke.

Griffen rolls, trying to escape but Caldeira keeps control of the position.

Griffen breaks Caldeira's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Griffen has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Griffen has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Caldeira is proving hard to escape from.
Griffen throws and elbow that misses. Caldeira uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Griffen's guard. Nice move by Caldeira!

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

and Caldeira moves into the clinch.
Griffen misses with a knee to the head.

Griffen's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Ryan Griffen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Caldeira tries to pull guard but Griffen holds him up against the cage and eventually Caldeira drops back down to his feet.
Griffen is looking to break free of the clinch but Caldeira has double underhooks.

Griffen manages to break the clinch.
Caldeira shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Griffen as he avoids it easily.
