PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Darren Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bas Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Brown has chosen William Shatner: Rocket Man as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Darren Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bas Brown!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brown avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
No joy there for Brown, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Brown throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Smith.

Smith gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Smith drops down looking for an ankle pick but Brown pulls his leg out and moves away.
Brown will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Smith feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Brown utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Brown looking for a sweep. Not yet Brown, not yet.
Smith throws a big right hand that misses.
Smith has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brown swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Brown is looking to stand up but Smith isn't so interested in that idea.

Smith thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Brown working a defensive guard but Smith passes into half guard.

Smith seems to be looking for submissions.
Brown looks like he's trying to stand up.
Brown looks gassed!
Smith wants to free his trapped foot but Brown is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Brown is trying to maintain the position but Smith is very close to passing his half guard.
Smith looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Smith throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.

Smith decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Smith stops Brown from getting back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Smith is looking for a kimura here.

Smith looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Brown tries to kick Smith off but Smith keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Smith tries to pass the half guard into mount. Brown knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Smith is trying to work for a kimura but Brown is defending well.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Smith uses his free foot to push down on Brown's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Brown.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Brown has left one of his arms exposed and Smith doesn't need a second invitation. He's isolated it and locked on a tight armbar. Brown screams and taps out, obviously in a lot of pain. Hopefully there isn't permanent damage to that arm.
