PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between George Flannagan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alan Ashcroft (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, George Flannagan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alan Ashcroft!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Columbo Gatti and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Flannagan shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Ashcroft as he jumps to the side.
Flannagan missing with a left hand there. Ashcroft was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Ashcroft lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Flannagan circles away quickly and effectively.
Flannagan pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Flannagan throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Ashcroft takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Flannagan misses with a kick to the body.

Ashcroft gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Flannagan is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Ashcroft is defending well for now.

Flannagan using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Ashcroft has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Ashcroft is trying to trip Flannagan. He has hold of a leg but Flannagan is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Ashcroft persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Flannagan controls Ashcroft momentarily but Ashcroft frees himself.
Ashcroft slips nicely into half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Flannagan tries to get to full guard but Ashcroft has control of the leg.
Ashcroft is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Ashcroft looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Ashcroft lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Despite being in the dominant position, Alan Ashcroft just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Flannagan throws an overhand right that lands on Ashcroft's shoulder, as Ashcroft tries to avoid the shot.
Flannagan lands a nice leg kick that just misses Ashcroft's sensitive parts.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Flannagan.

Ashcroft drives through and clinches with Flannagan against the cage.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Flannagan creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Ashcroft's defenses.
Flannagan misses with a knee strike.
A short body shot lands from Flannagan as the two fighters clinch.

Ashcroft will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Flannagan up against the cage.

Ashcroft is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Flannagan can't fight it off and eventually Ashcroft manages to take the fight to the floor. Flannagan looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Ashcroft must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

and Ashcroft counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Ashcroft stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Flannagan.
Flannagan loads up on a big right hand but Ashcroft slips the punch.
Flannagan throws a leg kick but Ashcroft sees it coming and checks it nicely.
George Flannagan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Flannagan misses with an attempted mid kick.

Ashcroft feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Ashcroft wants to control from the top but Flannagan keeps moving.

Flannagan has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Ashcroft can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Ashcroft stands and throws Flannagan's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Flannagan might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Flannagan tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Ashcroft wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Ashcroft controls the position.
Flannagan can't do much from the bottom here.
Flannagan is looking for a sweep.
Ashcroft tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Ashcroft is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Flannagan knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The referee asks Ashcroft politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Ashcroft prefers to stall for the moment though.
Flannagan is not content to let Ashcroft control the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Ashcroft avoids the head kick by Flannagan.
Flannagan tries a head kick but it misses.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Flannagan lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Ashcroft has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Ashcroft and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Ashcroft closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Flannagan did well to prevent Ashcroft getting side control.

Alan Ashcroft showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Flannagan's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Flannagan bucks up and tries to throw Ashcroft off but instead Ashcroft has got his back!
Ashcroft just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Flannagan is trying to break free.
Ashcroft keeps control of the position easily here as Flannagan tries to buck him off.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Alan Ashcroft comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Ashcroft winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
