PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Perry Van Pelt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bret Hill (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hill has chosen Wanted Dead Or Alive by Bon Jovi as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Perry Van Pelt had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 146.3lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Trevor Gratis and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hill drops Van Pelt with a left right combo! Hill follows him down to the ground into side control.


Van Pelt is rocked!


It looks like Perry Van Pelt has been cut.
Sloppy strikes there by Hill.
Oh Van Pelt is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Hill working the ground and pound.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Hill is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Van Pelt knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Hill is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Van Pelt is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Van Pelt gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Van Pelt seems to have got his legs back now.
Van Pelt tries to reverse the position but Hill maintains control.

Hill lands a big shot there that rocks Van Pelt but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Hill jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Van Pelt is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Van Pelt and Hill has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Van Pelt avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Hill.

Hill stands up.
Hill throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Van Pelt's head.
The fight stays on the outside here - Hill looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Van Pelt gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Van Pelt misses with an elbow strike.
Van Pelt comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Hill should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Van Pelt tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Van Pelt is breathing heavily.
Van Pelt throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Hill blocks it with crossed arms.

Van Pelt on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Hill gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Van Pelt is trying to stand.
Van Pelt tries to roll over but Hill keeps him under control.
Van Pelt has hold of Hill's hands but Hill slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Hill works his way into full mount!

Hill has hold of Van Pelt's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Van Pelt manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Van Pelt really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Hill throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Van Pelt because Hill loaded up on that one.
Hill punching from mount but Van Pelt doing a good job of avoiding damage.
Van Pelt squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Hill landing strikes from the mount and Van Pelt is in trouble!
Van Pelt is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Hill lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hill goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Van Pelt turns into him and now he's in Hill's guard.
Hill wants to hit a switch here but Van Pelt passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Hill there!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hill keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hill squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bret Hill dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Perry Van Pelt's cut.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Van Pelt throws a head kick that misses.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Hill is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Van Pelt has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Hill is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Hill on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Hill works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Van Pelt is working an open guard so Hill takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Van Pelt looks to clinch

and Hill counters with a shoot takedown. Van Pelt fights it but they end up in guard.
Hill is in close to Van Pelt's body, working some short punches and elbows.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hill won't allow Van Pelt to sweep him here.

Hill gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Hill decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Van Pelt is looking to improve his position.
Hill thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Van Pelt to regain full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Hill passes Van Pelt's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Hill wants to pass the guard but Van Pelt is defending well.

Hill seems to be working for a kimura but Van Pelt defends the submission attempt.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Hill stands up out of the half guard.

Hill takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hill connects with a nice short shot to Van Pelt's temple.
Van Pelt is trying to maintain the position but Hill is very close to passing his half guard.
Hill thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Van Pelt's head.

Hill decides to stand and escape the position.
Hill circles away from the clinch attempt

Van Pelt fails with an attempt to clinch.

and Hill counters with a shoot takedown. Van Pelt fights it but they end up in guard.

Hill works over Van Pelt with some ground and pound from guard.

Hill stands up from Van Pelt's guard - Hill perhaps looking for a knockout.

Hill has Van Pelt up against the cage in a clinch.

Hill jumps guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Hill is on top in guard.
Bret Hill has got the better of the ground game so far.
Van Pelt wants to get back to his feet but Hill is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Van Pelt has his feet on Hill's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Van Pelt tries to close the distance and clinch up but Hill swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Van Pelt tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Van Pelt wants to stall.
Van Pelt wants to break the clinch but can't.
Van Pelt misses with a knee to the head.
Hill scores with a hook to the body.
Hill is leaning against Van Pelt and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Van Pelt tries to score a body lock takedown but Hill shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bret Hill showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


A punch combination from Hill misses.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Hill.
Hill throws the left hand but Van Pelt avoids the punch easily.

Hill is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hill throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Hill lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Van Pelt!

Hill misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Hill pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Hill wants to finish this one by submission but Van Pelt is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Hill.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Hill moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Van Pelt has worked his arm free - good work by Van Pelt!

Hill decides to stand back up. Hill steps back and let's Van Pelt get back to his feet.
Hill misses with a few strikes there.
Van Pelt wants to clinch.

Hill scores with a takedown into Van Pelt's guard.
Hillis looking to pass into half guard but Van Pelt pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Van Pelt is in guard.
Van Pelt distracts Hill with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Hill looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Hill has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Van Pelt is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Hill.
Van Pelt gets to mount! Hill was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Hill is looking to improve his position but Van Pelt isn't that keen on the idea.
Hill manages to regain half guard. Good work.

Hill is staying active underneath Van Pelt, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Hill has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Bret Hill comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Hill has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
