PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Brian McBride (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mauri Ruoska (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ruoska has chosen Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the devil as his entrance music. Brian McBride has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Brian McBride!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mauri Ruoska!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Elvis Blanc and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McBride tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
A left lands for Ruoska.
McBride keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Ruoska punishes McBride's body with a nice straight punch.
Ruoska tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Ruoska throws a body kick that misses.
Ruoska darts in trying to clinch
and McBride counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Ruoska's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

McBride closes the distance and clinches.

Brian McBride has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mauri Ruoska.

Ruoska tries to stall but McBride uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
McBride is pressed up against the cage. Ruoska has hold of a leg and is looking to drag McBride down to the mat. McBride avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

McBride is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Ruoska is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Ruoska is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of McBride's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take McBride's back!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ruoska doesn't have the hooks in and McBride manages to turn into his guard.

McBride postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Ruoska is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of McBride, into his guard.

Ruoska trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
McBride wants to sweep but no luck.
McBride is trying to keep Ruoska in close.
Ruoska throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McBride works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Ruoska pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. McBride is keeping the position for now.

McBride wants to sweep here but Ruoska controlling him for the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and McBride counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

McBride seems to be working for a kimura but Ruoska defends the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Ruoska shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and McBride counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

and McBride counters with a nice uppercut.
Ruoska lands with a cross.
Ruoska keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Brian McBride is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Ruoska throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
McBride takes a swing at Ruoska's ribcage but misses.
Mauri Ruoska seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Ruoska counters by moving into the clinch.
McBride is trying to drag Ruoska to the mat but Ruoska just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

McBride has hold of one of Ruoska's legs. Ruoska is fighting the takedown attempt but McBride gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

McBride has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Ruoska can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Ruoska would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ruoska accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Ruoska is looking to work some ground and pound but McBride has wrist control.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

McBride doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

McBride is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
McBride is just content to waste time from the top position. Ruoska takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Ruoska is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! McBride is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! McBride has escaped and now he's on top!

McBride stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ruoska swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Ruoska fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with McBride, pushing him back against the cage.
Ruoska is looking to break free of the clinch but McBride has double underhooks.

Ruoska throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Ruoska ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Ruoska no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

McBride is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Ruoska has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Ruoska!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

McBride bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ruoska's guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
McBride stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ruoska swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Ruoska controls McBride momentarily but McBride frees himself.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and McBride moves into the clinch.
Ruoska tries to land knees in the clinch but McBride avoids the damage to the body.

Ruoska breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

so McBride counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Mauri Ruoska.
I think McBride has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
