PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joao Coves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Simmons (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Simmons has chosen Undisputed - Ludacris as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joao Coves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jack Simmons!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Seu Braga and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coves throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
No joy there for Coves, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Coves throws a right and a left that Simmons avoids nicely.

Simmons shoots in and bounces Coves off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Simmons missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Simmons drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Coves dives on top into guard.

Coves got a little sloppy there for a moment and Simmons has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Coves has managed to get both his arms back between Simmons's legs - danger averted.

Simmons is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Simmons is looking for a kimura here.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Simmons is looking to take a break and control but Coves is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Simmons is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Coves wants to get back to his feet.
Simmons should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Coves tries to bum rush Simmons with a series of wild strikes but Simmons uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
A punch combination from Coves misses.
Coves misses with an uppercut. Simmons saw that one coming.
Coves rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Simmons moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Coves misses with a looping left.
Coves throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Coves misses with a two punch combination.
Coves throws a lazy right hand but Simmons sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Coves throws a nice looking combination but Simmons bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Simmons uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Coves.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Simmons looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Simmons thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Coves's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Simmons dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Coves throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Coves misses with the combination.
A jab from Coves finds it's way through Simmons's defenses.

Simmons gets the takedown into side control.
Coves managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Simmons.
Simmons looking to control but instead Coves has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
Simmons is just content to waste time from the top position. Coves takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Simmonsis looking to pass into half guard but Coves pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Coves is in guard.
Simmons wants to improve his position but instead Coves has moved into half guard.
Coves slows the pace down in half guard.

Simmons looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Simmons looking for submissions off his back.
Coves tries to stand but can't do so whilst Simmons controls his leg.
Simmons trying to hold on to Coves's head to control him but Coves postures up.

Simmons looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Simmons won't allow Coves to pass to mount.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Simmons ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Coves throws a right and a left that both miss.
Coves throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Simmons.
Coves misses with a double jab.
Joao Coves is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Simmons closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Simmons wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Coves, who protects the arm well.

Simmons is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Coves looks calm but he's in trouble here. Simmons gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Coves is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Simmons lets go of the hold and Coves can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:03 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jack Simmons!
