PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Brian Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Conrad Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Brian Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Conrad Smith!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn lands a really nice looking cross but Smith seems unphased.


It looks like Conrad Smith has been cut.
Penn uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Smith.
Smith takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Smith misses with an uppercut. Penn saw that one coming.
Smith throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Penn.

Penn gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Penn keeps control of Smith as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Penn goes for a takedown attempt but Smith pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Penn closes the distance and clinches.

Smith throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

It looks like Brian Penn has been cut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Penn throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Penn throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Smith's waist but Smith gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Penn off to one side.
Smith takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Penn lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Smith circles away quickly and effectively.

and Penn counters with a shoot takedown. Smith fights it but they end up in guard.

Penn drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Penn jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Penn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Penn tries to free his leg and advance position but Smith is retaining full guard.
Penn postures up in Smith's guard and throws a big left but Smith blocks it.
Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Penn trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Penn thows a big elbow that misses.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
A nice combination there by Smith.
Penn wants to slow Smith down by chopping away at his legs.
Penn moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Smith uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Smith misses with a double jab
and Penn counters with a three punch combo that has Smith backing up. Smith nods at Penn to acknowledge the strikes.
Penn shoots for a double leg takedown but Smith sprawls well. He's pushed Penn's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brian Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Penn counters with a left and a right that stings Smith.

and Penn counters with a stiff right hand.
Penn swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Penn shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Smith napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Penn working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Smith!

Penn throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Smith because Penn loaded up on that one.
Penn sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Smith defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Penn.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Penn wants to finish this one by submission but Smith is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Penn.
Penn misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Poor strikes thrown by Penn there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Penn has control of Smith's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Smith regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Smith holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Penn tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Poor strikes thrown by Penn there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Smith falls off balance throwing a combination
enabling Penn to counter with a crisp jab.
Smith swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Penn connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Penn changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Smith looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Smith knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smith can do anything to dispel that myth.

Penn has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Penn there as he acknowledges the shot.

Penn keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Smith's efforts to push away.
Penn tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Penn gets control of Smith's arms and successfully pulls guard. Penn will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Penn manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Smith manages to get himself to full guard.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Penn is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Smith to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Smith shrugs it off.

Penn swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
