PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between John Boddy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rod Brave (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Brave has chosen Eco, Eco (somos de taleco) as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Boddy!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rod Brave!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Mauricio Rocha and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Brave.
Brave looking to control but instead Boddy has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boddy tries to kick Brave off but Brave keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
It looks like Brave is going to stand back up.
Brave sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Boddy defending well though.
Brave is stalling here. Boddy is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Brave seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Boddy has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Brave wants to get back to his feet but Boddy drags him back down.

Brave tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Boddy presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Boddy manages to capitalize on a mistake by Brave to take his back!
You can see the frustration on Brave's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

I really don't envy Brave right now.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
What can Brave do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Brave rolls, trying to escape but Boddy keeps control of the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Boddy is breathing heavily.

Brave is trying to shake Boddy off. He's managed it and has hopped back to his feet! Boddy won't be happy about giving up the dominant position.
Boddy blocks the body kick.
Boddy keeps the fight on the outside.
Brave throws a head kick but Boddy moves out of range.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brave tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Boddy paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Boddy shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Brave has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Boddy is working away from the top position though.
Boddy is keen to just control but Brave is a slippery customer.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Boddy prevents Brave from standing back up.
Brave is trying to control but Boddy manages to pass to mount!
Brave looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Brave trying to control but not successfully.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Brave tries to escape but Boddy has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that John Boddy will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


Brave throws a sloppy head kick and Boddy moves out of range easily.
Brave with a poor takedown

so Boddy counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Brave looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Boddy passes into half guard.
Boddy content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Boddy has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Boddy wants to lay and pray for a moment but Brave keeps working.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Brave gets full guard.
Boddy wants to control from the top but Brave keeps moving.
Brave is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Brave looking to hit a scissor sweep but Boddy is one step ahead there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brave is trying to keep Boddy in close.
Brave keeping moving, preventing Boddy from controlling successfully.
Brave wants to sweep but no luck.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Brave wants to get back to his feet but Boddy is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Boddy tries for a takedown but Brave circles away easily

and Brave counters by clinching up.
Boddy fails to pull guard.
Boddy tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Brave smiles and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Boddy. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Brave fails with an attempt to clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Boddy dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Brave scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Brave tries to advance position but instead Boddy slips a leg back in to half guard.
Boddy is not content to let Brave control the position.
Boddy is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Brave throws a strike but Boddy avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Brave gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Brave drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Brave throwing strikes but Boddy manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!

Boddy has control of an arm but Brave manages to advance to Boddy's back!

Brave is trying to control but Boddy is trying to escape here - he's now mounted.
Boddy is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Brave wants to control but Boddy has made it back to half guard. Nice work.
Boddy is trying is best to control the position here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brave trying to control from Boddy's half guard. Boddy has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Boddy seems keen to control Brave's posture.
Boddy not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Boddy keeping moving, preventing Brave from controlling successfully.
Brave working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Brave trying to control but Boddy is working from the bottom.

Brave drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Boddy dives on top into guard.
Brave controls Boddy momentarily but Boddy frees himself.
Boddy trying to control the position from guard on top but Brave is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Rod Brave.
I think Boddy has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
