PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Woodrow Poteat (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Gordon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Gordon will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Woodrow Poteat!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Gordon!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Poteat gets a takedown into half guard.
Poteat throwing shots but Gordon is blocking nicely.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Poteat trying to pass the guard but Gordon defending well.
Poteat has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Poteat is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Poteat trying to control the action but Gordon is working from the bottom.

Poteat looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Poteat stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Gordon throws a front kick aimed at Poteat's knee but Poteat avoids it well.
Gordon blocks a head kick by Poteat.
Poteat shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gordon defends it nicely.
Poteat shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gordon but Gordon pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Gordon throws a low kick, looking for Poteat's leg but Poteat calmly moves out of range.
Poteat moves in looking to clinch but Gordon pushes him off.

Gordon throws out a leg kick but Poteat moves out of range and Gordon only half commits.

Woodrow Poteat seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Poteat shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Poteat showed some decent athleticism there.
Poteat is looking to advance position but Gordon won't allow it.

That was a close round but I would say that Woodrow Poteat will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Horrible takedown by Poteat or perhaps it was just good defense by Gordon which made him look bad.
Poteat tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gordon sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Poteat somewhat.
Poteat throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Gordon counters with a three punch combo that has Poteat backing up. Poteat nods at Gordon to acknowledge the strikes.

Gordon lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.

Poteat gets a clinch.
Poteat is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Gordon pulls him back up using the underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Woodrow Poteat. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Poteat has Gordon pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Gordon manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Gordon lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Poteat circles away quickly and effectively.
Gordon fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Poteat is out of range.

Poteat breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Gordon fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Poteat checks it well.
Gordon shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

and Gordon counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Gordon connects with a good right hand that stumbles Poteat. Poteat circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Gordon feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Poteat's calf.
Donk. Gordon catches Poteat right on the button with a cross.
Gordon lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Poteat dodges the punch combination from Gordon.
Poteat shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Gordon as he avoids it easily.
Gordon throws a chopping leg kick but Poteat manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Gordon lands with a thumping leg kick.
Poteat swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Gordon connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Woodrow Poteat is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Gordon lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Gordon.

The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Poteat checks a leg kick.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

John Gordon showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Poteat shoots in looking for a takedown. Gordon tries to sprawl out of it but Poteat keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Gordon manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Poteat changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gordon tries to avoid it but Poteat manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gordon to the ground. Gordon escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Poteat misses with a takedown attempt - Gordon sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Poteat jumps guard but Gordon stands there with Poteat around his waist. Poteat gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Gordon is trying to break the clinch but Poteat is controlling him.
Poteat pushes off an throws an elbow but Gordon leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.

Gordon closes the distance and clinches.

Poteat jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Gordon walks away with a smile on his face. Poteat gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Gordon throws a solid leg kick but Poteat takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Gordon.
Poteat fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Gordon avoids it really well and circles away.
Poteat wants to clinch
and Gordon counters with a two punch combo.
Gordon attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Poteat checks a low kick from Gordon.

and Gordon counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Gordon is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Poteat is defending well for now.
Poteat has Gordon pressed against the cage, preventing Gordon from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Gordon wants to break free but Poteat has control.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Gordon wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Gordon creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Gordon looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Poteat takes an elbow to the forehead.
Gordon using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Poteat has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Poteat is trying to maintain a safe position but Gordon gets an underhook and turns Poteat into the cage.
Gordon tries to land a knee to the head but Poteat blocks with his arms.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Gordon wants to get back to striking at distance but Poteat won't allow it.
Gordon scores with a nice hook to the head.

Gordon breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gordon looks to land a combination. Poteat sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Gordon comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Gordon has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
