PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Oro Sein (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wagner Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Oro Sein!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Wagner Maia!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Felipe Paraventi and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Horrible takedown by Sein or perhaps it was just good defense by Maia which made him look bad.
Maia tries to clinch but Sein is having none of it.
Maia takes a jab right on the kisser.
Maia tries to land a front kick but Sein steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Maia leaves Sein with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Wagner Maia seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Maia tries a head kick but it misses.
Maia tries to clinch but Sein moves out of range.

Maia looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Sein is not content to let Maia control the position.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Sein pushes Maia off and gets back to his feet.

Sein shoots in and bounces Maia off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.
Maia wants to stand and escape but Sein is having none of it.

Sein throws and elbow that misses. Maia uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Sein's guard. Nice move by Maia!
Maia has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Sein is proving hard to escape from.

Maia decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Sein really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Maia fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Maia slaps away a takedown attempt from Sein, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Oro Sein. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Sein gets the takedown into side control.
Sein with the ground and pound but Maia regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
Sein is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Sein not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Sein throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Sein not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Sein seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Maia blocking the ground and pound attempt from Sein.
Maia has his hands clasped together around Sein's back. He's all about the action.
Maia looks like he's trying to stand up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Sein keeps the fight on the outside.
Sein doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Maia counters with a nice leg kick.
Sein is breathing heavily.
Maia shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Sein counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Maia's guard now.
Maia wants to get back to his feet but Sein is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Sein trying to control but Maia is working from the bottom.
Maia is controlling Sein's posture.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sein accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Maia avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Maia controls Sein momentarily but Sein frees himself.
Sein wanted to stand there but Maia had control of the position.
Sein trying to control but Maia is working from the bottom.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Sein shoots in but Maia avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Maia.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sein is defended easily by Maia.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Oro Sein will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business.


Sein avoids a punch combination nicely.
Sein staying out of range there.
Sein shoots for a takedown but Maia saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Maia tries to close the distance and clinch but Sein swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Maia clinches up with Sein and pushes him back against the ropes.
Sein struggles to land a body shot inside as Maia controls his hands.
Maia lands with a right to the head.
Maia is trying to maintain a safe position but Sein gets an underhook and turns Maia into the ropes.
Sein lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Maia or not.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Maia lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.

Maia tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sein swats him away and circles back towards the center.

and Sein decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Maia's guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Maia working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sein doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sein manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Sein shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Sein showed some decent athleticism there.
Maia tries to kick Sein off but Sein keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Sein with the ground and pound but Maia uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Sein thows a big elbow that misses.

Sein lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Maia looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Maia avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Maia is trying to keep Sein in close.

Maia manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Maia stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Maia wants it to stay on the feet.

Oro Sein dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Sein closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Maia to the mat! Maia manages to get full guard.

Maia is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Sein is aware though and is defending well.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Sein postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Maia gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Sein to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Oro Sein overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Oro Sein is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Maia moves into the clinch.

Maia gets control of Sein's arms and successfully pulls guard. Maia will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Sein wants to control from the top but Maia keeps moving.
Sein is really struggling to control Maia but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Maia wants to get back to his feet but Sein is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Sein trying to control the position from guard on top but Maia is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Sein knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Maia on the ground.
