PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Alan Wren (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kim Ruuti (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Alan Wren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kim Ruuti!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Arvi Lind and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruuti tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Wren paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Wren avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Wren fails with a takedown attempt.
Ruuti misses with a head kick.
Wren shoots in and drives through. Ruuti sprawls well.
Ruuti tries for a takedown but Wren circles away easily

and Wren counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Ruuti tries to strike from the bottom.
Wren passes Ruuti's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Wren is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Ruuti doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Wren.
Ruuti throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ruuti is looking for a sweep. Wren is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Wren lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Wren is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Wren throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Wren is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Wren throwing shots but Ruuti is blocking nicely.
Wren looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Wren is looking to take a break and control but Ruuti is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Wren looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Wren is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Ruuti is staying active underneath Wren, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Wren is working for a submission of some sort.
Wren thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Ruuti's head.

Wren is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Ruuti sees it coming and defends easily.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Wren is just content to waste time from the top position. Ruuti takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Ruuti had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Wren defends it easily.
Wren throwing strikes from guard but Ruuti blocks nicely.
Ruuti keeping moving, preventing Wren from controlling successfully.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Ruuti throws a combination that misses

and Wren counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Wren throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Wren thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Wren is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Wren is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Ruuti sees it coming and defends easily.
Ruuti is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Wren's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Wren's back!
Wren manages to reverse the position and now he's in Ruuti's guard. Nice work there by Wren.
Ruuti is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Wren wants to pass the guard but Ruuti is keeping the position.

Wren trying to control the position from guard on top but Ruuti is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Wren drops back looking for a leg! Ruuti is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Ruuti manages to kick Wren off! Wren jumps back into Ruuti's guard.
Ruuti scores with a couple of body punches from the bottom.

Wren postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Ruuti is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Wren, into his guard.

Wren looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Wren has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Ruuti can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Wren manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ruuti manages to get himself to full guard.
Wren wants to pass the guard but Ruuti is keeping the position.

Wren is working hard here to advance position.
Wren passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Ruuti is trying to get back to half guard.
Ruuti is not content to let Wren control the position.
Wren misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Ruuti is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Wren wants to lay and pray for a moment but Ruuti keeps working.
Wren cracks Ruuti with a big right hand but Ruuti just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Ruuti is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Wren has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Wren tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Wren has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Wren wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Ruuti, who protects the arm well.

Wren is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Ruuti is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alan Wren dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


No luck with that takedown attempt from Wren.
Ruuti throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Nice shot by Wren.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ruuti stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Wren.
Ruuti goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Ruuti shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Wren counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Ruuti's guard now.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Wren drops back, looking for a kneebar! Ruuti looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Ruuti looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Ruuti!
Wren gets back to half guard.
Ruuti takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Wren is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Ruuti pulls his head out easily.

Wren looking for submissions off his back.
Wren slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Wren working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ruuti doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ruuti manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Wren escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Ruuti gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ruuti with a flurry of punches that miss.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wren working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ruuti doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Wren is tightening it up a little... Ruuti has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Ruuti reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Ruuti taps out! nice BJJ there by Wren!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:01 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Alan Wren!
