PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Sho Kasugi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sky Hawk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hawk has chosen What a Rush as his entrance music. Sky Hawk told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Sho Kasugi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Sky Hawk!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Aleksandr Martynov and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hawk looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Kasugi is looking to improve his position.
Kasugi on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Kasugi is looking for a sweep. Hawk is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kasugi on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Kasugi tries to roll over but Hawk keeps him under control.
Hawk wants to pass the guard but Kasugi is defending well.
Kasugi trying to control but Hawk postures up.

Kasugi regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Hawk.
Hawk wants to control from the top but Kasugi keeps moving.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hawk accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Hawk works over Kasugi with some ground and pound from guard.
Hawk slips nicely into half guard.
Hawk throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Kasugi regains full guard. Nicely done.
Hawk is looking to work some ground and pound but Kasugi has wrist control.
Kasugi keeping moving, preventing Hawk from controlling successfully.
Kasugi not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Hawk controls from within his opponent's guard.
Hawk trying to control but Kasugi is working from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kasugi is on top in guard.
Hawk wants to stand and escape but Kasugi is having none of it.

Hawk wriggles free and stands up.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hawk is defended easily by Kasugi.
Hawk shoots in but Kasugi avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Kasugi misses with an attempted mid kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kasugi scores with a push kick.
Kasugi uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Hawk.
A head kick misses from Kasugi.
Hawk shoots in looking for a takedown. Kasugi tries to sprawl out of it but Hawk keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kasugi manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Sho Kasugi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sky Hawk.
Hawk looks gassed!
Hawk closes this distance looking for a takedown but Kasugi circles away.
Hawk looks to land a right hand but Kasugi moved out of range.
Kasugi throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Kasugi moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Kasugi - that will leave a mark!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Kasugi scores a takedown into full mount!
Kasugi avoids the attempt from Hawk to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sho Kasugi dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Kasugi is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
A head kick misses from Kasugi.
Hawk chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Kasugi can pounce on him.
Kasugi lands with a thumping leg kick.
Kasugi tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Hawk is able to avoid easily.
Kasugi throws a sloppy head kick and Hawk moves out of range easily.
Hawk misses with a takedown attempt
and Kasugi counters with a head kick. That will keep Hawk thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Hawk shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kasugi as he jumps to the side.
Kasugi tries a head kick but it misses.
Kasugi throws a front kick that sends Hawk stumbling back into the cage.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Kasugi scores with a slapping inside leg kick.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kasugi throws a head kick that half lands.
Hawk gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Kasugi counters with a good, hard body kick but Hawk shrugs it off.
Sho Kasugi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sky Hawk.
Kasugi lands a high kick!
Kasugi throws a head kick but Hawk moves out of range.

Hawk shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Kasugi's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kasugi is trying to control the position but Hawk postures up.
Hawk is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Hawk advances position into side control!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hawk in side control, throwing shots but Kasugi defends.
Hawk controlling the position from side mount.
Hawk scores with a couple of short elbows.
Hawk takes a little break here. Kasugi wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hawk is looking to take a break and control but Kasugi is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Kasugi is trying to escape the position but Hawk is controlling the position.
Hawk throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Kasugi being controlled for a moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hawk has control of an arm but Kasugi manages to advance to Hawk's back!
Hawk tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Hawk tries to hold on but Kasugi pushes him away.
Hawk regains half guard.
Hawk manages to get to full guard.
Hawk wants to sweep but no luck.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Sho Kasugi will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Hawk misses with a takedown
and Kasugi counters with a nice leg kick.
Hawk throws a hook to the side of Kasugi's head but Kasugi sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Hawk takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Sho Kasugi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Hawk closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Hawk laying and praying for a moment but Kasugi takes advantage and regains half guard.
Hawk missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Kasugi controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kasugi trying to hold on to Hawk's head to control him but Hawk postures up.

Hawk is pressing down on Kasugi's thigh, looking to free his foot. Kasugi is holding on for now.
Kasugi tries to roll over but Hawk keeps him under control.
Hawk perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hawk trying to control the action but Kasugi is working from the bottom.
Sky Hawk has got the better of the ground game so far.
Hawk not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kasugi is looking to land body kicks.
Hawk has his takedown stuffed
and Kasugi counters with an outside leg kick.
Kasugi lands a high kick!

Hawk drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Kasugi tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Hawk in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hawk stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kasugi swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hawk content to stall in guard here.
Hawk trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Sky Hawk has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Sho Kasugi is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Kasugi looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Kasugi is looking to slow Hawk down with leg kicks.
Kasugi lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Hawk on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Kasugi keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Sho Kasugi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sky Hawk.
Kasugi cracks the inside of Hawk's front leg.
Sho Kasugi is winning the standup battle so far.
Hawk takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Hawk throws a shot from downtown. Kasugi moves away and avoids it.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Sho Kasugi.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kasugi, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
