Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Julio Mesquita (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Miguel Santiago (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Julio Mesquita!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Miguel Santiago!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Luis Engracia and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Santiago looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mesquita is fending him off so far but Santiago persists. Nope, Mesquita circles away and we're back to standing.
A punch combination from Mesquita misses.
Mesquita throws a right and a left that both miss.
Santiago keeps the fight on the outside.
Mesquita tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Santiago paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Mesquita doesn't manage to clinch there - Santiago circles away.

and Santiago counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Santiago.

Santiago breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Mesquita doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Santiago counters with a shoot takedown. Mesquita fights it but they end up in guard.

Mesquita isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Santiago stacks Mesquita on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Santiago!
Mesquita is looking to regain half guard here but Santiago keeps moving and retains side control.
Santiago is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Mesquita's shoulder. That is not cool.

Mesquita misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Santiago blocks the strikes from Mesquita.

Mesquita is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Santiago pulls his head out easily.
Mesquita is breathing heavily.

Santiago looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Santiago takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Santiago tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mesquita is staying active underneath Santiago, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Mesquita looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Santiago moves nicely into side control.
Santiago is looking to take a break and control but Mesquita is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Mesquita seems a little lost for a moment, as Santiago dominates the positioning.
Mesquita taking punishment in the form of punches.
Mesquita is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Santiago is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Santiago wants to control the pace but Mesquita is squirming around nicely.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Santiago might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Mesquita kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Mesquita is trying desperately to improve position.
Santiago looking to control but Mesquita is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Santiago lands a heavy elbow.
Mesquita is looking to improve his position but Santiago isn't that keen on the idea.
Santiago raining down shots from the mount!
Mesquita regains half guard.
Mesquita is looking for a sweep. Santiago is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Santiago trying to control the pace.
Mesquita tries to get to full guard but Santiago has control of the leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miguel Santiago dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Santiago shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Mesquita counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Santiago's guard now.
Santiago not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Santiago is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Santiago really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mesquita. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Despite being in the dominant position, Miguel Santiago just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Mesquita shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Santiago counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Mesquita looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Mesquita had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Santiago defends it easily.
Mesquita could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Santiago is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mesquita is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Santiago defends well.
Santiago is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Santiago tries to free his leg and advance position but Mesquita is retaining full guard.
Mesquita bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Santiago's guard.
Santiago wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Mesquita drops back looking for a leg! Santiago is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Santiago manages to kick Mesquita off! Mesquita jumps back into Santiago's guard.

Santiago controls Mesquita momentarily but Mesquita frees himself.

Julio Mesquita overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Mesquita drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Santiago manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Mesquita has Santiago in his guard.

Santiago wanted to stand there but Mesquita had control of the position.
Mesquita keeping moving, preventing Santiago from controlling successfully.

Mesquita is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Santiago rolls with it to try and escape but Mesquita cranks on the arm and Santiago is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
