PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Benisato Rage (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Craig Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Craig Penn was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Benisato Rage!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Craig Penn!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rage tries to clinch but Penn is having none of it.
Penn fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Penn misses with a takedown attempt - Rage sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Rage closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Penn to the mat! Penn manages to get full guard.
Penn looking for a sweep. Not yet Penn, not yet.
Penn has control of Rage's left arm, preventing Rage from doing any damage.
Rage preventing the sweep.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rage wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Rage is trying to control but can't.
Penn seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Penn wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rage keeps working.
Penn slows the pace down in half guard.
Rage tries to get to full guard but Penn has control of the leg.
Rage has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Penn is working away from the top position though.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Rage is looking for a sweep. Penn is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Penn is trying to control. Rage wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Rage with a poor takedown

and Penn counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Rage's guard now.
Penn wants to control from the top but Rage keeps moving.
Rage is trying to keep Penn in close.
Penn trying to control but Rage is working from the bottom.
Rage looking for a sweep. Not yet Rage, not yet.
Rage trying to control the position.

Rage looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Penn has picked Rage up and slammed him! Rage can't keep hold of the triangle and Penn manages to pass to side control!
Rage wants to control but Penn postures up.
Rage wants to get back to his feet but Penn drags him back down.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Rage fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Penn, pushing him back against the cage.
Rage wants to break the clinch but can't.
Penn prevents a takedown attempt there.
Rage is breathing heavily.
A hook to the body from Rage.

Penn wants the takedown. Rage is fighting it off but Penn persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Rage's guard against the cage.
Penn passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Penn is looking to take a break and control but Rage is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penn takes a little break here. Rage wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Rage knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Craig Penn dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Penn closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Penn decides to stand up, so the ref orders Rage to his feet.
Rage shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Penn counters with a takedown into side control.
Rage is trying to improve his position.

Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Rage knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Penn is trying to get an arm triangle but Rage is defending well.
Penn is breathing heavily.
Penn wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rage keeps working.
Rage sneaks back into half guard.
Rage trying to control from the bottom.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Penn controlling the action here.
Penn is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
Penn wants to control from the top but Rage keeps moving.
Rage looking to control.
Penn showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Penn trying to stand up but can't free himself from Rage's guard.

Craig Penn has got the better of the ground game so far.

Rage is working an open guard so Penn takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Penn tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Penn shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Penn was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Rage wants to control but Penn is having none of it.

Penn has control of Rage's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Rage regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Rage tries to hold on but Penn postures up.
Rage has given up his back here.
Penn gets his hands free as Rage looks to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Craig Penn showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Rage's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Rage gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Penn counters with a single leg into guard. Rage didn't expect that.
Rage not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Benisato Rage just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Penn feints and as Rage raises his hands in defense, Penn changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Penn sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Rage looking to control.
Penn stays in close to Rage's body and controls the position.
Penn stopping the sweep attempt from Rage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rage wants to control the position but Penn says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Penn trying to pass the guard but Rage defending well.
Rage is trying to stand up here but Penn is controlling him well.
Rage tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

and Penn counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Rage is trying to get back to full guard.
Penn is just content to waste time from the top position. Rage takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Rage keeping moving, preventing Penn from controlling successfully.
Penn is stalling in the full guard.
Rage looking to control.

Penn drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Penn jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Rage has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Rage wants to sweep here but Penn controlling him for the moment.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Rage is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Penn clinches with his opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Penn wants a takedown.
Penn tries to pull guard but Rage won't allow it.
Rage jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Penn walks away with a smile on his face. Rage gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Benisato Rage. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rage wants to clinch but Penn slips to the side

and Penn counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Penn looking to pass the guard.
Rage working a defensive guard here.

Penn drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Rage dives on top into guard.
Benisato Rage has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Craig Penn is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Penn has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Rage is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Penn.

And that's the end of the fight!
Craig Penn comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Penn winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
