PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jakob Van Tripp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jim Daniels (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Daniels has chosen Enter Sandman by Metallica as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jakob Van Tripp!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jim Daniels!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Steve Smith and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Daniels tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Daniels darts in and clinches Tripp up against the cage.
Tripp jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Daniels walks away with a smile on his face. Tripp gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Tripp slips a jab and a cross from Daniels.
Daniels stuffs the takedown attempt from Tripp. Tripp gets slowly back to his feet.
Daniels misses with a head kick.
Daniels keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jakob Van Tripp. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Daniels closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

It looks like Jakob Van Tripp has been cut.
Daniels is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Tripp is defending well for now.
Tripp fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Tripp gets control of Daniels's arms and successfully pulls guard. Tripp will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Daniels looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Daniels must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Tripp is trying to keep Daniels in close.
Tripp is looking to stand up but Daniels isn't so interested in that idea.

Daniels not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Tripp looking for a sweep. Not yet Tripp, not yet.
Daniels looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Let's hope that Daniels has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Tripp is looking for a triangle but Daniels pushes his legs off easily.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

I looks like Daniels might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Despite being in the dominant position, Jim Daniels just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Tripp changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Daniels looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Tripp stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Tripp is breathing heavily.

Daniels shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Tripp napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Daniels has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Tripp walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Daniels clinches.
Tripp fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Tripp jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Daniels walks away with a smile on his face. Tripp gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Tripp shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Daniels as he jumps to the side.
Tripp leaves Daniels with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jim Daniels dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Jakob Van Tripp's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Daniels shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Tripp defends it nicely.

Tripp looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Daniels!
Daniels is trying to escape the mount.
Daniels is squirming around, avoiding Tripp's attempts to control the action.
Daniels sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Daniels moves into full guard.
Tripp sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Daniels tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Daniels is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Daniels keeping moving, preventing Tripp from controlling successfully.
Daniels controls Tripp momentarily but Tripp frees himself.
Tripp is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Tripp postures up.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Tripp changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Daniels tries to avoid it but Tripp manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Daniels to the ground. Daniels escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Daniels perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Tripp wants to get back to full guard.

Daniels takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Tripp tries to roll over but Daniels keeps him under control.
Tripp trying to control from the bottom.
Tripp misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Tripp looks like he's trying to stand up.
Daniels sitting and controlling from the half guard.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Daniels lands a nice short elbow.

Daniels is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Jim Daniels showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Daniels clinches up with Tripp and pushes him back against the cage.

Daniels breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Tripp misses with a takedown attempt - Daniels sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Daniels scores with a hook to the body. Tripp takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Daniels closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Tripp to the mat! Tripp manages to get full guard.

Daniels gets through Tripp's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Tripp tries to pull guard but Daniels won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jakob Van Tripp. That's going to take a lot out of him.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Tripp accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Daniels looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Daniels looking to hit a scissor sweep but Tripp is one step ahead there.
Tripp trying to control the position from guard on top but Daniels is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Daniels is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Daniels jumps guard and drags Tripp to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Daniels has control of Tripp's left arm, preventing Tripp from doing any damage.
Tripp wants to control from the top but Daniels keeps moving.

Daniels lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Tripp!

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Daniels tries to control but Tripp wriggling away.
Jakob Van Tripp has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Tripp throws a body punch but Daniels moves out of range.

Jim Daniels comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Daniels has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
