Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Vlad Tepes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Billy Mates!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Trevor Gratis and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tepes changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mates tries to avoid it but Tepes manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mates to the ground. Mates escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Mates looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Mates misses with a takedown

and Tepes decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Mates's guard.
Tepes throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mates works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Tepes pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mates is keeping the position for now.
Tepes is working hard here to advance position.
Mates utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Tepes's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Tepes throws a big right hand that misses.
Mates really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Tepes. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Mates keeping moving, preventing Tepes from controlling successfully.

Mates working a defensive guard but Tepes manages to pass into side control anyway.
Mates is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Tepes cracks Mates with a big right hand but Mates just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Tepes in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Mates is not content to let Tepes control the position.

Tepes thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Mates is trying to control Tepes's posture but Tepes avoids it.

Tepes is trying to get an arm triangle but Mates is defending well.

Tepes is putting a hurting on Mates here, landing some big shots from side control.
Tepes creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Mates sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Mates is looking to regain half guard here but Tepes keeps moving and retains side control.
Tepes has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Tepes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mates keeps working.

Tepes wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mates, who protects the arm well.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Tepes cracks Mates with a big elbow.
Tepes lands a nice forearm strike.
Tepes creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Mates sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Mates is looking for a sweep.
Mates is working to avoid the ground and pound but Tepes connects with a decent elbow.
Tepes throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Tepes cracks Mates with a big right hand but Mates just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Tepes will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Mates fails with an attempt to clinch.
Tepes shoots in but Mates avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Mates drops Tepes with a beautiful combination! Tepes stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Mates is looking for the KO!

and Mates decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Tepes's guard.
Oh Tepes is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vlad Tepes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Tepes is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Tepes seems to have got his legs back now.
Tepes wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mates has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Tepes is proving hard to escape from.
Tepes might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Tepes has Mates pulled in close to control his posture.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Tepes is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Nice takedown defense from Mates. No joy for Tepes on that attempt.

Mates feints and as Tepes raises his hands in defense, Mates changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Mates stops Tepes from standing up.
Mates wants to stand and escape but instead Tepes has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Tepes forces his way into half guard.

Tepes is looking for a kimura here.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Tepes lands a nice short elbow.
Mates avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Tepes.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Tepes missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Tepes moves nicely into side control.
The strikes coming from Tepes are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Tepes in side control, throwing shots but Mates defends.
Tepes tries to score with some ground and pound. Mates controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Mates is trying to get back to half guard.
Mates is not content to let Tepes control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Billy Mates showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Mates is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Tepes has control of Mates's left arm, preventing Mates from doing any damage.
Vlad Tepes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Tepes has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Mates off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Mates throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Tepes was covering up waiting for the punch and Mates finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Tepes pushes Mates off and gets back to his feet.
Tepes is looking to clinch but Mates is avoiding it.

and Tepes counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Mates!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Tepes looking to control but Mates is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Tepes lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Tepes lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Mates is trying desperately to improve position.

The referee warns Mates that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mates can do anything to dispel that myth.

Tepes looking to finish Mates with some ground and pound. This is bad for Mates!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
