Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Alexander Smirnov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cowgill Nightmare (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cowgill Nightmare is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Alexander Smirnov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Cowgill Nightmare!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Skip Squint and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nightmare stuffs the takedown.
Nightmare tries to close the distance and clinch up but Smirnov swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Nightmare shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Nightmare was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Nightmare lands a big elbow.
Nightmare really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smirnov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Smirnov is trying to escape the mount.
Smirnov is working hard here to advance position.
Nightmare trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Smirnov is looking to improve his position but Nightmare isn't that keen on the idea.
Smirnov slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nightmare is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Nightmare gets to his feet. Smirnov looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Smirnov misses with a takedown attempt

and Nightmare decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Smirnov's guard.
Nightmare seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Smirnov looking for a sweep. Not yet Smirnov, not yet.

Smirnov is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Smirnov manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Smirnov can't control as he wanted to and Nightmare manages to get the fight back to his half guard.

Smirnov is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Smirnov is desperately trying to improve his position but Nightmare has a good base and remains in mount.
Smirnov regains half guard.
Nightmare wants to stand but Smirnov has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Nightmare seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Smirnov does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Nightmare tries to stand but can't do so whilst Smirnov controls his leg.
Smirnov moves into full guard.
Nightmare must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Nightmare drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Nightmare jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Smirnov is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Smirnov pushes Nightmare off and gets back to his feet.

Smirnov misses with the combination.
Nightmare misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Nightmare wants to clinch.
Nightmare shoots and misses

and Smirnov counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Nightmare!
Nightmare is breathing heavily.

Smirnov is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Nightmare to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Nightmare shrugs it off.
Smirnov lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Smirnov landing punches.

Smirnov wants to control the action but instead Nightmare gets a body lock and reverses into Smirnov's guard! Nice work!

Nightmare shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Smirnov looks like he's trying to stand up.
Nightmare is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Smirnov reverses the position - he's now on top in Nightmare's guard.

Smirnov gets to his feet - Nightmare follows without any prompting.
Nightmare shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Smirnov counters with a single leg into guard. Nightmare didn't expect that.
Nightmare takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Nightmare keeping moving, preventing Smirnov from controlling successfully.
Smirnov prevents Nightmare from getting back to his feet.
Smirnov passes into half guard.
Nightmare wants to get back to full guard.
Smirnov is trying to control. Nightmare wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Smirnov is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Nightmare!

Smirnov looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.

Nightmare defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Smirnov.
Nightmare tries to reverse the position but Smirnov maintains control.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Nightmare can do anything to dispel that myth.

Smirnov stands up from mount. Strange move.
A combination from Smirnov does no damage.
Smirnov shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Nightmare counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Smirnov has his hands clasped together around Nightmare's back. He's all about the action.
Smirnov moves into full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smirnov bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Nightmare's guard.
Smirnov trying to control but Nightmare is working from the bottom.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Smirnov looking to sit in guard and control but Nightmare gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Smirnov not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Well Smirnov has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
