PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Seb Roland (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Stokoe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Seb Roland!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 1, fighting out of London, Alex Stokoe!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Andrew Berry and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stokoe leaves Roland with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Roland dives in and grabs Stokoe's left leg, looking for a takedown. Stokoe pushes down on Roland's head and hops out.
Stokoe lands with a slapping head kick.


It looks like Seb Roland has been cut.
Roland fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Seb Roland. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Stokoe throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Roland.

Stokoe gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Stokoe is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Roland tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Roland has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Stokoe uses from the top position.

Stokoe decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Roland shoots in and drives through. Stokoe sprawls well.
Stokoe closes the distance and clinches up with Roland, looking for a takedown. Stokoe pushes Roland against the cage but Roland circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Stokoe pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Stokoe has closed the distance and engaged Roland in a clinch.
Stokoe throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Roland tries to pull guard but Stokoe won't allow it.

Roland jumps guard and drags Stokoe to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Stokoe is looking to stand up but Roland won't let him.

Stokoe has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Roland.
Roland fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Stokoe avoids it really well and circles away.

and Stokoe counters with a body kick.
Stokoe lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Stokoe plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Stokoe drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Roland gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Roland tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Stokoe lands an elbow that stopped Roland in his tracks for a moment.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.

Roland ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Roland no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Stokoe wants to get up but he can't break Roland's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Roland is controlling Stokoe's posture.

Roland is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Roland gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Stokoe counters with a head kick.
Seb Roland is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Stokoe fails with the takedown

and Roland counters with a shoot takedown. Stokoe fights it but they end up in guard.
Stokoe utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Stokoe is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Roland is controlling him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Roland lands a couple of elbows.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Roland makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Roland stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stokoe swivels though and keeps the full guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Roland darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Roland wants to control but Stokoe is keeping him busy.

Stokoe makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Roland tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Stokoe swivels and escapes.

Stokoe gets caught flat footed, as Roland shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Roland's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Stokoe wants to stand up but Roland is controlling him.

Roland drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Roland jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Roland drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Stokoe manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Roland has Stokoe in his guard.
Stokoe has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Roland is proving hard to escape from.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Roland is on top in guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Stokoe wants to stand but Roland is controlling the position.
Roland passes into half guard.
Roland winds up and cracks Stokoe with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Roland shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Stokoe counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Roland is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Roland throwing strikes but Stokoe manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!

Stokoe decides to stand up, so the ref orders Roland to his feet.

Stokoe throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Horrible takedown by Roland or perhaps it was just good defense by Stokoe which made him look bad.

Roland takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Stokoe fails in his attempt to clinch.

Alex Stokoe seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Stokoe throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Roland.

Seb Roland overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Well, if Roland is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Roland is pressing down on Stokoe's thigh, looking to free his foot. Stokoe is holding on for now.

Roland wants to pass to mount but Stokoe is defending the position.
Stokoe wants to get back to his feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Roland has Stokoe pressed against the cage, preventing Stokoe from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Roland loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Seb Roland showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Roland has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
