PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rob Dragon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James york (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that James york was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rob Dragon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, James york!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Alec Ball and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Dragon shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Dragon throwing strikes here but york is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Dragon scoring with strikes but york is staying in there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Dragon with a couple of short strikes.
york looks gassed!

Dragon is working for a guillotine from mount but york frees his head quite easily.

Dragon stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Dragon darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Dragon is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

york keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Dragon wants to pass to mount but york is defending the position.

Dragon is looking for a kimura but york is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Dragon to get the leverage.

york is defending against the submission attempts here by Dragon.
Dragon seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but york does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Dragon is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, york has managed to free his arm - good work.

Dragon is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
york scores with a decent looking hook.

york with a lazy takedown attempt
and Dragon counters with a nice leg kick.

Dragon shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Dragon was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Dragon is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But york has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from york!
Dragon wants to stand up but york is controlling him.
Dragon knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for york on the ground.
Dragon is looking to stand back up but york counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Dragon.

york seems to be working for a kimura but Dragon defends the submission attempt.
Dragon might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

york seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
york trying to control the action but Dragon is working from the bottom.

Dragon kicks york off and gets back to his feet.

Dragon scores a takedown into full mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Dragon goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now york is on top in guard.
Dragon is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst york is controlling him.
Dragon trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rob Dragon dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


york misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

and Dragon counters with a shoot takedown. york fights it but they end up in guard.

Dragon drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Dragon jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

york is working an open guard so Dragon takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
york doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Dragon counters with a takedown into side control.
Rob Dragon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James york.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Dragon thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
york wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

That's one minute gone in the round.

Dragon stands up.
Dragon tries to close the distance and clinch but york swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
york does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Dragon is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
york doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Dragon counters with a good low kick that york was not able to check.
Dragon doesn't manage to clinch there - york circles away.

so Dragon counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
york is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Dragon wants to get up but he can't break york's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
york keeping full guard, as Dragon tries to pass.
Dragon thows a big elbow that misses.
Rob Dragon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Dragon stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. york swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Dragon is working hard here to advance position.
Dragon is looking to work some ground and pound but york has wrist control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Dragon wants to control from the top but york keeps moving.
Dragon in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Dragon closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Dragon is trying to get an arm triangle but york is defending well.

Dragon decides to stand back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
york pivots, looking for a leg kick but Dragon is out of range and york settles back down.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!

and Dragon counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

york makes his way to full guard, as Dragon worked for a kimura.
Dragon controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Dragon postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! york is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Dragon, into his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rob Dragon dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Dragon shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Dragon is trying to control. york wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Dragon seems to be looking for submissions.

york is defending against the submission attempts here by Dragon.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Dragon thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Dragon wants to take a breather but york is having none of it.
It looks like Dragon is going to stand back up.
Dragon throwing shots but york is blocking nicely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Dragon lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
york lands with a right hand.
york swats away the attempt to clinch by Dragon.
Dragon looks for a takedown but york sprawls well.
york shoots for a double leg takedown but Dragon sprawls well. He's pushed york's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

york gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Dragon wants to control from the top but york keeps moving.

Dragon drops back, looking for a kneebar! york looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. york looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from york!
york wants to lay and pray for a moment but Dragon keeps working.
Dragon wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Dragon bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
york shoots and misses
and Dragon counters with a head kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
york takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

york drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
york stops Dragon from standing up.

Dragon wriggles free and stands up.

york gets caught flat footed, as Dragon shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Dragon loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
york keeping moving, preventing Dragon from controlling successfully.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rob Dragon showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Dragon has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
