PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kennu Kekkonen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roger Motabe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kennu Kekkonen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Roger Motabe!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Johanna Lukiainen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Motabe throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Kekkonen fails with an attempt to clinch.
Motabe tries to clinch up.
Motabe misses with a takedown attempt - Kekkonen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Motabe misses the shot to the body.
Kekkonen lands with a thumping leg kick.

Kekkonen gets the takedown into side control.
Kekkonen prevents Motabe from escaping the position.
Kekkonen trying to control the position but Motabe is working away.

Kekkonen stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Kekkonen tries to clinch but Motabe moves away

and Motabe counters with a nice double leg into side control. Kekkonen won't be happy with that.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Motabe tries to stand but Kekkonen is controlling his head.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Motabe decides to stand up, so the ref orders Kekkonen to his feet.

Kekkonen decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Motabe looks gassed!
Still in half guard, Kekkonen seems content to control.
Kekkonen with the ground and pound but Motabe uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Kekkonen trying to control the position from guard on top but Motabe is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Motabe pushes Kekkonen off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Kekkonen looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Motabe shoots in for a takedown but Kekkonen shows good takedown defense.

Motabe looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Kekkonen controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
Motabe wants to stand up but Kekkonen has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Kekkonen holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Motabe tries to stand and escape but Kekkonen is controlling the position.
Kekkonen slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Kekkonen looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Motabe puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Kekkonen tries to get to full guard but Motabe has control of the leg.
Motabe wants to stand but Kekkonen has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Motabe tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kekkonen gets full guard.
Kekkonen looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Kennu Kekkonen will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Motabe circles away from the clinch attempt.
Motabe throws a head kick but Kekkonen moves out of range.
Motabe with a poor takedown

and Kekkonen holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Kekkonen blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Motabe drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kekkonen looking to throw knees to the head but Motabe is blocking nicely.
Motabe is breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kekkonen lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Motabe doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

and Kekkonen counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Motabe's guard now.

Kekkonen tries to free his leg and advance position but Motabe is retaining full guard.
Motabe can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Kekkonen controls the pace.
Kekkonen won't allow Motabe to get back to his feet.

Kekkonen drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Motabe dives on top into guard.
Motabe is fighting to break Kekkonen's control of his arms but Kekkonen is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Motabe stands up from Kekkonen's guard - Motabe perhaps looking for a knockout.

Kekkonen tries to keep at a distance but Motabe has taken the fight into the clinch.
Motabe lands with a light punch inside.
Motabe jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Kekkonen walks away with a smile on his face. Motabe gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Kennu Kekkonen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Roger Motabe.
Motabe scores with a kick to the midsection.
Motabe clinches but Kekkonen breaks the clinch
and Kekkonen counters with a nice leg kick.
Kekkonen tries to clinch there but Motabe circles away.
Kennu Kekkonen is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Motabe tries to close the distance and clinch but Kekkonen swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kennu Kekkonen dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Motabe looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kekkonen is fending him off so far but Motabe persists. Nope, Kekkonen circles away and we're back to standing.

Motabe avoids a series of strikes thrown by Kekkonen.
Kekkonen throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Kekkonen can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Motabe is looking to escape.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
You get the feeling that Motabe really doesn't like being in this position too much.

Kekkonen jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Motabe is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Motabe and Kekkonen has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Kekkonen working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Motabe is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Kekkonen is really struggling to control Motabe but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Kekkonen cracks Motabe with an elbow. That is naaassty.

Kekkonen swings around for an armbar but Motabe sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Kekkonen's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Motabe stands and steps away. Kekkonen gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Motabe shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kekkonen defends it nicely.

Kekkonen gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Motabe to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Kennu Kekkonen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Kekkonen kicks Motabe off and gets to his feet.
Motabe throws a half hearted mid kick.
Motabe shoots in but Kekkonen avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Kennu Kekkonen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Roger Motabe.
Motabe gets off balance looking for a body kick

and Kekkonen counters with a single leg into guard. Motabe didn't expect that.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Motabe wants to get back to his feet but Kekkonen is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Motabe is working an open guard so Kekkonen takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Motabe misses with a takedown

and Kekkonen counters with a shoot takedown. Motabe fights it but they end up in guard.

Kekkonen drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Motabe manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Kekkonen has Motabe in his guard.
Motabe must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Kekkonen is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kennu Kekkonen showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Kekkonen has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
