PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Aaron Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Aaron Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Peter Griffin!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Eddie Farnsworth and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith connects with a nice looking jab.
Smith lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Griffin throws a big shot that misses.
Smith shoots in looking for a takedown. Griffin tries to sprawl out of it but Smith keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Griffin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Smith misses with a body kick.

Smith gets a takedown into half guard.
Griffin is looking for a sweep. Smith is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Griffin is looking to get back to full guard here but Smith has managed to pass to side control instead.
Griffin is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

Smith controlling the pace for now.
Griffin wants to control but Smith is having none of it.

Smith sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Smith really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Smith trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Griffin's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Griffin regains half guard.
Griffin tries to kick Smith off but Smith keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Smith looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Griffin is trying to get back to full guard.
Smith controlling the pace.

Griffin is defending against the submission attempts here by Smith.
Griffin wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.

Griffin is trying to control but can't.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Smith throws a right hand that Griffin ducks under and follows up with a left that Griffin also avoids with ease.
A punch combination from Griffin misses.
Griffin is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Smith.
Griffin is looking to chop away at Smith's legs.

Griffin goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Smith rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Griffin's guard! Nice work there by Smith!

Smith won't allow Griffin to get back to his feet.

Smith is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Smith slips nicely into half guard.

Griffin looking for submissions off his back.

Smith is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Griffin defends it well.
Smith perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aaron Smith dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Smith throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Griffin's head.
Griffin loads up on a big right hand but Smith slips the punch.
Griffin throws a looping overhand right but Smith ducks down to avoid it.

Smith decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Griffin is looking for a sweep. Smith is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Smith throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Griffin kicks Smith off and gets back to his feet.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Smith.

Griffin drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Griffin tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Smith wants to control but Griffin postures up.
Griffin is breathing heavily.

Smith gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Griffin prevents Smith from improving his position.
Smith moves into full guard.

Griffin drops back, looking for a kneebar! Smith looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Smith looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Smith!

Smith wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Griffin, who protects the arm well.

Smith is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Griffin is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Griffin pushes Smith away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Smith gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Smith passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Griffin!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smith is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Griffin has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Smith looking for a guillotine from mount but Griffin is having none of it.
Smith tries to control but Griffin wriggling away.

Griffin is looking to get to half guard.

Smith will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Griffin is wriggling around trying to escape.
Smith won't let Griffin get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Smith prevents Griffin from getting the reversal.
Smith controlling the position easily from mount.
Griffin wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.

Smith has control of Griffin's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Griffin regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Griffin wants to hold on but Smith pushes him away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aaron Smith dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Smith shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Griffin manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Griffin is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Aaron Smith overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Griffin has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smith can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Smith thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Smith is looking to work some ground and pound but Griffin has wrist control.
Griffin keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Smith advances to half guard.
Griffin tries to roll over but Smith keeps him under control.

Smith is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Griffin wants to get back to full guard.
Still in half guard, Smith seems content to control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Griffin wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.
Griffin is refusing to be controlled, as Smith sits in half guard.

Griffin looking for submissions off his back.

Smith stands up and beckons Griffin to join him on the feet.
Smith connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Griffin's hands.
Smith throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Griffin shoots in and drives through. Smith sprawls well.

Smith shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Griffin napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Griffin is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Smith has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Griffin is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Griffin being controlled for a moment.
Smith working the body and head with strikes.
Griffin is not content to let Smith control the position.
Griffin tries to improve position but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Smith thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Griffin manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Smith looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

And that's the end of the fight!
Aaron Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Smith has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
