PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Pauli Sankari (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yu Kanda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sankari comes into the arena with SMC Hoodrats blaring out of the sound system. Both fighter's entrance songs getting the crowd jumping here.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Pauli Sankari!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Yu Kanda!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Tarja Halkonen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kanda throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Sankari's waist but Sankari gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kanda off to one side.
Nice takedown defense from Sankari. No joy for Kanda on that attempt.

Kanda gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Sankari to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Kanda wants to sweep here but Sankari controlling him for the moment.

Sankari drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Sankari jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Kanda has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sankari can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Sankari is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Kanda is trying to stand up here but Sankari is controlling him well.
Sankari wants to stand up but Kanda has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Sankari wants to pass the guard but Kanda is keeping the position.

Kanda is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Kanda lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Sankari!

Kanda goes for an armbar but Sankari turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Sankari.

Kanda wants to sweep but no luck.

Kanda is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Kanda drops down looking for an ankle pick but Sankari pulls his leg out and moves away.
Pauli Sankari has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yu Kanda.
Sankari takes a head kick and keeps coming.

Kanda bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Sankari is looking for a sweep.
Kanda wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sankari keeps working.
Sankari tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Kanda trying to control the action but Sankari is working from the bottom.

Kanda is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Sankari knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Kanda looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Sankari manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Kanda is staying active underneath Sankari, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Kanda has one foot on Sankari's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Kanda fails with the takedown
and Sankari counters with a nice low kick that buckles Kanda's knee momentarily.

Sankari throws a head kick but Kanda moves out of range.

Sankari shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Kanda manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Sankari passes Kanda's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Kanda wants to get back to full guard.

Kanda is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sankari's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sankari's back!

Kanda throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.
Sankari is trying to break free.

Kanda is looking for the choke from the back position but Sankari is controlling his hands well.

Watch the back of the head! Comes the shout from the referee towards Kanda.

Sankari is trying to get back to his feet but Kanda has full control of the position and if anything, Sankari has just worked his way into a worse spot.

Kanda is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Sankari has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Sankari looking very determined here, making life difficult for Kanda.
Sankari manages to reverse the position and now he's in Kanda's guard. Nice work there by Sankari.

Sankari decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Sankari thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Kanda tries to get to full guard but Sankari has control of the leg.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Sankari's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Kanda wants to clinch

and Sankari counters with a single leg into guard. Kanda didn't expect that.
Kanda is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Kanda is trying to control the action in half guard but Sankari is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Kanda seems to be looking for submissions.
Sankari makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Sankari.
Kanda stands and throws Sankari's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Sankari tries to buck Kanda off but Kanda is having none of it.
Kanda is looking to take a break and control but Sankari is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Sankari wants to get back to his feet but Kanda drags him back down.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sankari tries to roll over but Kanda keeps him under control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sankari wants to get back to his feet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kanda misses with a takedown

and Sankari counters with a single leg into guard. Kanda didn't expect that.

Kanda working for a triangle but Sankari defends it easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Kanda has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Sankari is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Kanda.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Pauli Sankari.
Well Sankari has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
