PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mason Allen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jim Saliva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Allen kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Korn - Blind. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mason Allen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jim Saliva!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Steve Montenegro and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Saliva connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Saliva closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Nice takedown defense from Saliva. No joy for Allen on that attempt.

Allen drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Allen staying calm.
Allen wants to lay and pray for a moment but Saliva keeps working.
Saliva is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Allen is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Saliva is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Allen stands up and beckons Saliva to his feet.
Saliva avoids the body shot from Allen.
Saliva lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Allen circles away quickly and effectively.
Saliva throws a sloppy head kick and Allen moves out of range easily.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Saliva, as that shot connected.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Saliva gets caught flat footed, as Allen shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Saliva is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Allen is controlling him.
Allen looking to pass the guard.
Allen is working hard here to advance position.
Allen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Saliva is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Allen is controlling him.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Allen misses with a takedown attempt - Saliva sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Allen.

Allen stands up and we're back to a striking position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Allen looks to score with a jab to the body but Saliva is just out of range.
Allen takes one to the side of the head.
Saliva throws a push kick but Allen slaps the foot to one side.
A slow jab from Allen misses its intended target.

Allen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Saliva pushes Allen away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Allen gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mason Allen dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Saliva tries to land a front kick but Allen steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Allen fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Saliva looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Allen's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Allen duly obliges.

Saliva's corner calls for a 1-2. Saliva obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Saliva throws a combination that misses
and Allen counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Saliva stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
A punch combination from Saliva misses.
Good work by Allen as he checks the leg kick.

Allen shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Allen showed some decent athleticism there.

Allen is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Saliva sees it coming and defends easily.

Saliva pushes Allen off looking to stand but Allen dives back in and keeps control.

Saliva looks like he's trying to stand up.
Saliva is not content to let Allen control the position.
Allen content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Allen prevents Saliva from standing back up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Allen throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Saliva counters with a three punch combo that has Allen backing up. Allen nods at Saliva to acknowledge the strikes.
Saliva misses with a double jab

Saliva throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.

Allen scores with a takedown into Saliva's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Allen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Allen tries to free his leg and advance position but Saliva is retaining full guard.
Allen is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Allen pushing down on Saliva's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Allen is working for a kimura but Saliva is defending it quite comfortably.
Allen wants to free his trapped foot but Saliva is holding on for dear life with his legs.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Allen is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Saliva is trying to stand up here but Allen is controlling him well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Saliva makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Saliva misses with the combination.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mason Allen dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Saliva looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Saliva swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Saliva connects with a nice looking jab.

Saliva gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Allen won't allow Saliva to get back to his feet.
Allen looking to sit in guard and control but Saliva gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Saliva tries to free his leg and advance position but Allen is retaining full guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Allen is on top in guard.

Allen stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Saliva misses with the combination.
Saliva slips a jab and a cross from Allen.
Saliva throws a nice looking combination but Allen bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Saliva gets off balance looking for a body kick

and Allen counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Saliva's guard now.
Saliva wants to stand up but Allen is controlling him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Allen trying to control but Saliva is working from the bottom.
Saliva wants to stand but Allen is controlling the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Saliva will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Saliva scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Allen fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
A big right from Saliva misses.
Saliva misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Allen throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Saliva takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Allen throws a right hand that Saliva ducks under and follows up with a left that Saliva also avoids with ease.
Nice takedown defense from Saliva. No joy for Allen on that attempt.
Allen dodges the punch combination from Saliva.
Allen changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Saliva tries to avoid it but Allen manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Saliva to the ground. Saliva escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mason Allen. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Jim Saliva seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A looping hook to the body misses from Allen. Saliva does a little dance to reset his feet.
Saliva displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Allen.

Mason Allen showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Allen, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
