PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between dave mastiff (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kurt Spangle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for dave mastiff has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, dave mastiff!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Kurt Spangle!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Daniel Bishop and Andrew Berry.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spangle throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
mastiff tries to close the distance and clinch but Spangle swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Spangle shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Spangle trying to control the position from guard on top but mastiff is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
mastiff looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Spangle puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

mastiff actively working from the bottom here.
Spangle is pressing down on mastiff's thigh, looking to free his foot. mastiff is holding on for now.
mastiff makes his way to full guard. A much better position for mastiff.
mastiff wants to sweep but no luck.
mastiff is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

mastiff wants to sweep here but Spangle controlling him for the moment.
Spangle advances position into side control!
Spangle is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Spangle decides to stand back up. Spangle steps back and let's mastiff get back to his feet.
mastiff fails with the takedown

and Spangle counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

mastiff is working an open guard so Spangle takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Spangle shoots in and bounces mastiff off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
mastiff is breathing heavily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Spangle sitting in guard here, content to control.
I looks like Spangle might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

mastiff throws his legs up looking for a submission but Spangle uses it to pass to side control.
mastiff is trying to get back to half guard.

Spangle decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Spangle looks to clinch
and mastiff counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Spangle thinking.

and mastiff counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Spangle's guard now.

Spangle has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but mastiff can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
mastiff has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Spangle can do anything to dispel that myth.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Spangle is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Spangle has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but mastiff can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
mastiff looking to sit in guard and control but Spangle gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Excellent takedown into side control there by Spangle.
mastiff is trying to control Spangle's posture but Spangle avoids it.
Spangle has knee on belly and moves into mount.
mastiff is desperately trying to improve his position but Spangle has a good base and remains in mount.
mastiff tries to hold on but Spangle postures up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

mastiff wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Spangle.

Spangle jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… mastiff is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by mastiff and Spangle has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Kurt Spangle has got the better of the ground game so far.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Spangle tries to move to full mount but mastiff actually manages to regain half guard.

mastiff pushes Spangle off and gets back to his feet.
mastiff lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Spangle clinches but mastiff breaks the clinch
and mastiff counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
mastiff has his takedown stuffed

and Spangle counters with a single leg into guard. mastiff didn't expect that.
Spangle loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Spangle gets to his feet. mastiff looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
mastiff circles away from the clinch attempt
and mastiff counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Spangle is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Spangle fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. mastiff sprawls well initially but Spangle persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Spangle in particular looking to stall.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Spangle postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for mastiff to stand up.
mastiff keeps the fight on the outside.
Spangle fails to land with a series of punches.

Spangle closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming mastiff to the mat! mastiff manages to get full guard.
Spangle controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Spangle is in close to mastiff's body, working some short punches and elbows.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Kurt Spangle showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Spangle shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. mastiff manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
mastiff is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Spangle gets to his feet - mastiff follows without any prompting.
mastiff throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Spangle rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but mastiff moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

mastiff is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Spangle scores with a couple of nice shots.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
mastiff looks like he's trying to stand up.
Spangle not doing much here.

Spangle stands up from half guard.

mastiff gets caught flat footed, as Spangle shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
mastiff will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Spangle looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

mastiff is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Spangle slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Spangle sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed mastiff's guard.
Spangle is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
mastiff trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
mastiff can't escape the position.
Spangle lands a heavy elbow.

Spangle takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Despite being in the dominant position, Kurt Spangle just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Spangle closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kurt Spangle comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Spangle winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
