PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Coffe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and King Kong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Kong's choice of entrance music: King Kong. John Coffe has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Coffe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, King Kong!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Edson Gomes and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kong shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Kong showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

Kong drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Coffe dives on top into guard.

Coffe gets to his feet - Kong follows without any prompting.
A head kick misses from Kong.

Kong shoots in and bounces Coffe off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Kong throws a strike but Coffe rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Coffe trying to control but Kong is working from the bottom.

Kong throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Kong wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Kong keeping moving, preventing Coffe from controlling successfully.
Kong is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Kong is trying to control the action in half guard but Coffe is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Kong throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Kong in particular looking to stall.
Let's hope that Kong has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Kong throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Kong is taking a breather. Coffe says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Kong throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Kong trying to control the action but Coffe is working from the bottom.

Despite being in the dominant position, King Kong just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Coffe tries to clinch there but Kong circles away.
Coffe doesn't manage to clinch there - Kong circles away.
No luck for Kong with that takedown attempt.

Kong darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Coffe looks like he's trying to stand up.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Coffe blocking the ground and pound attempt from Kong.

Kong is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Kong with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Coffe is refusing to be controlled, as Kong sits in half guard.
Kong is controlling the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

King Kong dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Coffe will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Kong closes the distance and clinches.
Kong using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Coffe has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Coffe wants to break free but Kong has control.

Kong breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Kong moves into the clinch successfully.
Kong gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.


It looks like John Coffe has been cut.

Kong circles away from the clinch attempt

and Kong counters with a nice double leg into side control. Coffe won't be happy with that.
Coffe trying to remain calm as Kong controls from the top position.
Kong trying to control the action but Coffe is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kong is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Kong decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Coffe darts in trying to clinch

and Kong counters with a single leg into guard. Coffe didn't expect that.

Kong is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Kong not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Kong gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Coffe clinches but Kong breaks the clinch

and Kong holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Coffe tries to land a knee to the head but Kong blocks with his arms.
Coffe is trying to force a seperation but Kong has the dominant position.
Kong fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Kong prevents Coffe from breaking the clinch.

Kong breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Coffe looks to clinch

and Kong counters with a takedown into side control.
Coffe is not content to let Kong control the position.

Kong decides to stand up, so the ref orders Coffe to his feet.
Kong tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Coffe swivels and escapes.
Coffe tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Kong counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Coffe knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kong on the ground.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Coffe wants to stand and escape but Kong is having none of it.
Kong is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Coffe is looking to stand up but Kong isn't so interested in that idea.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

King Kong showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on John Coffe's cut.
That's time! Coffe's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Kong instigates a clinch.
Coffe is trying to break the clinch but Kong has him pressed against the cage.
Coffe with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Coffe looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Coffe just misses with a elbow thrown towards Kong's brow.

Kong breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

and Kong decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Coffe's guard.
Kong pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Coffe is keeping the position for now.
Kong missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Kong gets to his feet - Coffe follows without any prompting.

Kong shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Coffe manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Kong working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Coffe's head.

Kong decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Coffe, up you get!

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Coffe takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Kong bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Kong decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Kong wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Coffe, who protects the arm well.

Kong decides to stand up, so the ref orders Coffe to his feet.
John Coffe seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Coffe looks to clinch
and Kong makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

Kong scores with a takedown into Coffe's guard.
Coffe utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Kong is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Kong's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Kong stands up from Coffe's guard - Kong perhaps looking for a knockout.

Coffe throws a right and a left that Kong avoids nicely.
Kong is trying hard to land a takedown here. Coffe sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Kong shoots in but Coffe avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Kong closes the distance and clinches up with Coffe, looking for a takedown. Kong pushes Coffe against the cage but Coffe circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
John Coffe has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of King Kong.
Coffe clinches but Kong breaks the clinch
and Kong counters with a solid body kick.
Kong closes the distance and lands a one-two.

Kong shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Coffe's guard.

Kong gets to his feet - Coffe follows without any prompting.
John Coffe has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

and Kong counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
King Kong is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kong is looking to stall here but Coffe recovers full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
King Kong comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kong has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
