Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kevin Benson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ivan Roman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kevin Benson had a look across the ring there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kevin Benson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ivan Roman!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, John Kavanagh and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roman tries to close the distance and clinch but Benson swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Benson throws a quick inside leg kick.
Benson scores with a push kick.
Roman shoots in but Benson avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Benson throws a right and a left that Roman avoids nicely.

Benson has managed to clinch.
Benson has Roman pressed against the ropes, preventing Roman from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Benson keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Roman's efforts to push away.
Roman tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Benson smiles and moves away.
Benson swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Roman.


It looks like Ivan Roman has been cut.

Benson drives through and clinches with Roman against the ropes.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Roman has had enough of the clinch but Benson keeps him there for the moment.
Roman is looking for a takedown up against the ropes. Benson gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Kevin Benson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ivan Roman.
Benson lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Roman backwards.
Roman looks gassed!

Benson ties up his opponent against the ropes and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Benson no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Roman drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Benson dives on top into guard.
Benson's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Benson passes Roman's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Roman on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Kevin Benson just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Roman tries to score a power double leg takedown but Benson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Roman somewhat.
Benson throws a wild body kick that Roman sees coming a mile off.
Roman tries to clinch

and Benson counters by moving into the clinch.
With the fighters up against the ropes, Roman throws an elbow but misses.
Benson using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Roman has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Roman on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Benson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Benson has taken the fight to the clinch.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Benson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Roman moves out of range of the leg kick from Benson.

Benson clinches.
Benson really is a fat lump.

Benson drags the fight down to the ground.
Roman throwing strikes from guard but Benson blocks nicely.

Roman pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Benson is keeping the position for now.
Benson is controlling Roman's posture.
Roman keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Benson's head.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Roman throws a strike but Benson rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Benson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Roman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Benson pushes down on Roman's leg and manages to get into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Benson winds up and cracks Roman with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Roman is in trouble now - Benson has advanced to mount!
A nice elbow there by Benson.
Benson landing strikes from the mount and Roman is in trouble!
Benson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Benson is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Roman wants to get up but he can't break Benson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Benson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

and Benson moves into the clinch.
Roman is trying to drag Benson to the mat but Benson just about manages to keep his footing. He used the ropes to his advantage there.

Benson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Benson drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Benson gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Benson scores with a one two! Roman had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Benson lands with a thumping leg kick.

Benson takes the fight into the clinch.

Benson decides to pull guard.
Benson bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Roman's guard.

Roman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Roman has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Benson's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Roman misses with a takedown

and Benson counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Benson is working Roman over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Roman is looking to stand up but Benson isn't so interested in that idea.
Benson content to stall in guard here.
Benson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Roman swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Roman wants to stand and escape but Benson is having none of it.
Benson controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Benson is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

and Benson moves into the clinch.
Roman is looking to control Benson's arms but Benson gets an underhook and turns him. Now Roman has his back to the ropes.

Benson has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Roman uses from the top position.
Benson has control of Roman's left arm, preventing Roman from doing any damage.

Benson is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Roman is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and Benson has latched onto it... Big trouble! Benson pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Roman is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Benson!
