PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mike Duran (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Orlando Gomez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gomez comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Something in your Mouth kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Mike Duran has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mike Duran!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Orlando Gomez!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Seu Braga and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomez shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Duran as he avoids it easily.

Gomez pushes Duran up against the cage in a clinch.
Gomez trying to land knees to the body.
Duran wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Gomez manages to break the clinch.

Gomez closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gomez lands in his opponent's guard.
Gomez advances to half guard.
Gomez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Duran does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Duran is looking to escape.
Gomez is looking to pass Duran's guard but actually Duran recovers to full guard.
Duran wants to stand but Gomez is controlling the position.

Duran keeping moving, preventing Gomez from controlling successfully.
Duran is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Gomez stays in close to Duran's body and controls the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Duran misses with a few strikes there.
Gomez shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Duran sprawls well. Duran wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gomez gets slowly back to his feet.
Gomez looks for a takedown but Duran sprawls well.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gomez fails with a takedown attempt.

Gomez tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Duran paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Duran throws a wild body kick that Gomez sees coming a mile off.

Duran shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Gomez is looking to escape.
Gomez looks gassed!

Gomez tries to get to full guard but Duran has control of the leg.
Duran looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Gomez pushes Duran off and gets back to his feet.
Gomez showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Duran.
Gomez misses with a takedown

and Duran counters with a nice double leg into side control. Gomez won't be happy with that.
Duran advances nicely into full mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Duran controlling the position easily from mount.
Duran seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Gomez for as long as he can get away with.
Gomez really wants to buck Duran off and get back to his feet.
Duran controlling the pace for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Some wild striking there from Duran.
Mike Duran seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Duran shoots in for a takedown but Gomez shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Duran swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Gomez shoots in and drives through. Duran sprawls well.

Duran closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Duran gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Gomez.
Duran lands with a short head shot on the inside.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gomez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Duran closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Gomez did well to prevent Duran getting side control.

Duran wants to stand but his hand is trapped. Gomez uses the opportunity to regain full guard.
Duran's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Gomez is looking for a triangle but Duran pushes his legs off easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Duran won't allow Gomez to sweep him here.
Gomez trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Duran has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Duran stays in close to Gomez's body and controls the position.

Gomez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Mike Duran has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Orlando Gomez.

Duran rushes Gomez and presses him up against the cage.
Duran tries to pull guard but Gomez won't allow it.
Duran blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Gomez fails to pull guard.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Gomez fails to pull guard.
Duran jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Gomez walks away with a smile on his face. Duran gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Duran misses with a wild combination.
Nice sprawl there from Gomez as Duran shoots in.

Gomez tries a head kick but it misses.
Gomez blocks a head kick by Duran.

Gomez shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Duran is looking to escape.
Gomez tries to pass to full mount but Duran defends it.
Duran is looking to escape.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gomez content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Duran lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Gomez circles away quickly and effectively.

Gomez bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Gomez trying to control the action but Duran is working from the bottom.
Gomez is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mike Duran will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Gomez avoids the head kick by Duran.

Gomez has closed the distance and engaged Duran in a clinch.
Gomez tries to score a body lock takedown but Duran shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Duran turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Duran manages to end up in side control.
Duran trying to control the action but Gomez is working from the bottom.
Gomez is trying to control Duran's posture but Duran avoids it.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Gomez manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Duran pushes Gomez off and gets back to his feet.
Gomez misses with a takedown

and Duran counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Gomez's guard now.

Gomez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Duran doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Duran manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Duran stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Gomez stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gomez wants it to stay on the feet.

Duran circles away from the clinch attempt.
Gomez shoots in but Duran avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Gomez shoots in for a takedown but Duran shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Duran takes a little break here. Gomez wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Duran decides to stand back up.

Duran moves in looking to clinch but Gomez pushes him off.
Duran looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Duran throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Gomez gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Duran counters with a nice uppercut.

Gomez shoots in and bounces Duran off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Duran keeping moving, preventing Gomez from controlling successfully.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gomez prevents Duran from getting back to his feet.
Gomez seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Gomez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Duran swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Duran pushes Gomez off and scrambles back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mike Duran showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Duran has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
