PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between D Day (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rand James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for D Day has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, D Day!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Rand James!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Johanna Lukiainen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Day fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Day looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? James is fending him off so far but Day persists. Nope, James circles away and we're back to standing.
Day changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. James tries to avoid it but Day manages to keep hold of a leg and drag James to the ground. James escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for D Day. That's going to take a lot out of him.

James clinches.

James gets a trip takedown into half guard.
James is figuring out what he wants to do next.
James is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
James trying to mount his opponent but Day defends it.

Day has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. James is working away from the top position though.
James really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Day. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Day tries to get to full guard but James has control of the leg.
James throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

James is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Day is just riding it out for now. James eventually gives up the hold.

James is keen to just control but Day is a slippery customer.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. James connects with a nice short shot to Day's temple.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Day has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
The fight stays on the outside here - James looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Day avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

and James counters with a nice low kick that buckles Day's knee momentarily.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Day is breathing heavily.

James moves into the clinch.

James has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Day clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
James controls the action.
Day is covering up but some of the strikes from James are getting through and doing damage.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
James lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Day hold on?!
A bit of a pause in the action here. James controlling the positon.
James is looking to finish with some ground and pound!
Day breaks James's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as James holds on and takes a little breather.

Day postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! James is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Day, into his guard.
Day not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
James is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
James trying to control the position from guard on top but Day is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

James postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Day looking to hit a scissor sweep but James is one step ahead there.

James seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Day is trying to stand up here but James is controlling him well.

James looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
James is nestled in close to Day, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

James is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
James scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
James is looking to take a break and control but Day is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
James works his way into full mount!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The referee warns Day that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Day's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

James has picked Day up - he's going for a ride! James dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
James winds up and cracks Day with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Day is trying to defend against the ground and pound but James scores with a couple of nice shots.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Day is looking for a sweep. James is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, James cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

James might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Day kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
You get the feeling that Day really doesn't like being in this position too much.
James has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
James lands a big shot there that rocks Day but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
BOOM! James connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Day tries to kick James off but James keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
James is trying to control. Day wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Rand James has got the better of the ground game so far.
James working over Day with some ground and pound. Day looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
James is trying to control. Day wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Day is in trouble now - James has advanced to mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rand James showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

James throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Day has his hands clasped together but James breaks the hold and Day is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by James!
