PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jocke Persbrandt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Beard Guy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Guy has chosen Why Can't We Be Friends? as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Jocke Persbrandt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Beard Guy!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Guy wants to clinch.
Persbrandt leaves Guy with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Guy shoots for a double leg takedown but Persbrandt sprawls well. He's pushed Guy's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Persbrandt fails with a takedown attempt.
Guy takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Persbrandt feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Persbrandt decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
The fight stays on the outside here - Guy looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Persbrandt lands with a nice combination. Guy backs away looking to recover.
Horrible takedown by Persbrandt or perhaps it was just good defense by Guy which made him look bad.

Guy gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Persbrandt ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Persbrandt no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Persbrandt is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Guy drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Persbrandt manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Guy has Persbrandt in his guard.
Guy looks gassed!

Persbrandt stands and steps away. Guy gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Persbrandt tries to clinch there but Guy circles away.

and Persbrandt counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Guy looking for submissions off his back.
Guy is pressing down on Persbrandt's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Guy can do anything to dispel that myth.

Guy looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Persbrandt passes into side control.
Guy seems a little lost for a moment, as Persbrandt dominates the positioning.
Persbrandt wants to control but Guy is keeping him busy.

Persbrandt stands up and beckons Guy to his feet.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Guy pushes Persbrandt up against the cage in a clinch.
Persbrandt tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Guy decides to pull guard.

Guy looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Guy looking for a guillotine here but Persbrandt defends easily.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Persbrandt is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Guy is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Persbrandt slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Guy explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

and Persbrandt holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Guy throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Persbrandts head.

A head punch on the inside from Guy fails to land.

Persbrandt wants to stall.
Guy lands a right hand.
Persbrandt blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Persbrandt jumps guard and drags Guy to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Guy loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Guy throws a big right hand that misses.
Guy is looking to work some ground and pound but Persbrandt has wrist control.
Guy throws and elbow that misses. Persbrandt uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Guy's guard. Nice move by Persbrandt!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Persbrandt connects with a couple of short punches.

Guy looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Persbrandt passes into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jocke Persbrandt dominated that round.
That's time! Persbrandt's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

and Persbrandt counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Persbrandt.
Guy misses with the head strike.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Guy.
Persbrandt tries to score a body lock takedown but Guy shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Guy fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Guy keeps control of Persbrandt as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Guy doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Guy swings wildly with an uppercut but Persbrandt uses good head movement to avoid it.

Persbrandt breaks the clinch.
Guy wants to clinch but Persbrandt slips to the side

and Persbrandt counters with a takedown into side control.

Persbrandt thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Guy is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Guy is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Persbrandt pulls his head out easily.
Guy tries to kick Persbrandt off but Persbrandt keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Persbrandt lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Persbrandt is trying to control. Guy wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Guy is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Guy is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Guy clinches but Persbrandt breaks the clinch
letting Persbrandt counter with a right hand.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Persbrandt is trying hard to land a takedown here. Guy sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Persbrandt pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Guy swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Persbrandt counters with a nice body kick.
Guy moves forwards but Persbrandt connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Persbrandt tries to clinch but Guy moves out of range.

Guy manages to break the clinch.

Persbrandt fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Guy sprawls well initially but Persbrandt persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Persbrandt is looking to take a break and control but Guy is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Guy pushes Persbrandt off and gets back to his feet.

Guy rushes Persbrandt and presses him up against the cage.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Persbrandt tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Guy just stands there and leans against the cage.

Persbrandt wants to control from the top but Guy keeps moving.

Guy escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Persbrandt gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Guy is working an open guard so Persbrandt takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Guy wants to clinch but Persbrandt slips to the side

and Persbrandt counters by clinching up.
Guy keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Persbrandt's efforts to push away.
Guy misses with a short punch on the inside.
Persbrandt scores with a shoulder strike.
Persbrandt blocks an uppercut.
Guy tries to pull guard but Persbrandt won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

and Persbrandt decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Guy's guard.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Persbrandt lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Guy down.

Guy is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Persbrandt is controlling him well.
Persbrandt scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Guy to see if he's OK.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Jocke Persbrandt has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Beard Guy.

Persbrandt is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Guy can't fight it off and eventually Persbrandt manages to take the fight to the floor. Guy looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Persbrandt with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Persbrandt got a little sloppy there for a moment and Guy has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Persbrandt has managed to get both his arms back between Guy's legs - danger averted.
Persbrandt stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Guy swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Persbrandt is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Guy is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Guy has his foot on Persbrandt's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Persbrandt works his way back into a safe position though.

Guy had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Persbrandt defends it easily.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Persbrandt, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
