The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smithers moves away from the strike by Emelianenko.
Emelianenko loads up on a big right hand but Smithers slips the punch.
Emelianenko avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Emelianenko fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Smithers manages to avoid it.
Smithers keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Smithers throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Emelianenko.

and Smithers takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Smithers throws a series of strikes that have Emelianenko backpedaling.

Smithers rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Emelianenko moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Emelianenko throws an overhand right that lands on Smithers's shoulder, as Smithers tries to avoid the shot.
Emelianenko throws a body punch but Smithers moves out of range.

Emelianenko misses with a hook. Smithers ducked under it nicely.
Smithers goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Smithers gets caught flat footed, as Emelianenko shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Smithers wants to get back to his feet but Emelianenko is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Emelianenko postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Emelianenko tries for a takedown but Smithers sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
No joy there for Smithers, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Smithers throws out a loose jab but Emelianenko uses good head movement to avoid it.
Smithers will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Noah Smithers dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Emelianenko cracks Smithers with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Emelianenko has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning Smithers to stand back up!

A big right followed by a crushing left from Emelianenko knocks Smithers out cold! Ouch - that one's going to be featured in highlight reels for years to come!
