PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nick Rock (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Napier (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Napier comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Pulse of the Maggots- Slipknot kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nick Rock!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jack Napier!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Bruno Hogan and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Napier dives in and grabs Rock's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rock pushes down on Napier's head and hops out.
Rock scores with a head kick.

Napier gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Rock to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Napier keeping moving, preventing Rock from controlling successfully.
Rock with a flurry of punches that miss.

Napier has a closed guard, preventing Rock from standing up.
Rock wants to pass the guard but Napier is keeping the position.
Rock pushing down on Napier's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Napier is trying to control but can't.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Rock in particular looking to stall.

Rock is keen to just control but Napier is a slippery customer.
Rock wants to free his trapped foot but Napier is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Napier should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Rock closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Napier is looking for a sweep. Rock is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Rock knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Napier on the ground.
Rock tries to stand and escape but Napier is controlling the position.
Napier is looking to control Rock's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Napier avoid being mounted?

Napier is looking for a sweep. Rock is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Napier looks gassed!
Rock is looking to take a break and control but Napier is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Rock wants to pass to mount but Napier is defending the position.

Rock is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Napier doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Rock.
Napier wants to improve his position but Rock is controlling well.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
A combination from Napier does no damage.

Rock shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
A solid leg kick lands there for Rock.
Rock misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Rock fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Rock shoots in and drives through. Napier sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nick Rock. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Napier tries to clinch up but Rock circles away and keeps his distance.
Rock lands with a kick to the temple. Napier shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Napier gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Rock counters with a series of strikes. Napier will be more careful next time no doubt.
Napier displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Rock.
Nick Rock seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rock dives in and grabs Napier's left leg, looking for a takedown. Napier pushes down on Rock's head and hops out.

Rock throws a leg kick which misses Napier's front leg but catches the back leg as Napier tries to avoid it.
Rock tries for a takedown but Napier sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Rock leaves Napier with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Rock fails in his attempt to clinch.
Napier throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

and Napier counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Rock moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Rock misses with a takedown

and Napier counters with a shoot takedown. Rock fights it but they end up in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nick Rock dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Rock fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Rock keeps the fight on the outside.
Rock misses the shot to the body.
Napier with a lazy takedown attempt

so Rock counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Napier avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Rock tries to free his leg and advance position but Napier is retaining full guard.
Rock would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Napier is trying to control the position but Rock postures up.
Napier keeping moving, preventing Rock from controlling successfully.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Rock working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Napier's head.

Napier is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Rock throws a head kick but Napier moves out of range.
Rock shoots in for a takedown but Napier shows good takedown defense.
Napier avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Rock is looking to clinch but Napier is avoiding it.

Rock scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Napier is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Rock tries to pass the half guard into mount. Napier knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Rock not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Rock stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Napier to get to his feet.

Rock moves into the clinch.

Rock breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Rock tries to clinch
and Napier counters with a straight right hand.

Rock shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Rock showed some decent athleticism there.
Rock seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Napier does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Napier blocking the ground and pound attempt from Rock.
Rock blocks the strikes from Napier.
Rock uses his free foot to push down on Napier's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Napier.
Rock can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Napier is looking to escape.
Napier is in all sorts of trouble here.
Rock avoids the attempt from Napier to control.

Rock with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Napier is trying desperately to improve position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Rock sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rock misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Rock with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Rock wants to control the pace but Napier is squirming around nicely.
Rock blocks Napier's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Napier moves out of range as Rock throws a body kick.
Napier takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Rock moves in looking to clinch but Napier pushes him off.
Napier doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Rock counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Rock.
A frustrated look appears on Napier's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Napier tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Rock smiles and moves away.
Rock fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Rock shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Napier sprawls well. Napier wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Rock gets slowly back to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Nick Rock has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jack Napier.

Rock controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Napier working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rock doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rock manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Napier has momentary wrist control but Rock slips an elbow through the middle.
Nick Rock overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Rock stands up from Napier's guard - Rock perhaps looking for a knockout.
Rock throws a series of punches but Napier moves out of range.
Rock tries to close the distance and clinch up but Napier swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Rock lets loose with a powerful body kick. Napier will feel that in the morning.
Rock throws a head kick that half lands.

Rock gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Rock pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A slapping body kick lands there for Rock.
Rock is looking to slow Napier down with leg kicks.
Napier swats away the attempt to clinch by Rock.
Rock is looking to clinch but Napier is avoiding it.
Rock rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Napier moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Rock moves in looking to clinch but Napier pushes him off.
Napier looks to land a combination but Rock avoids it well.

Rock closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Napier to the mat! Napier manages to get full guard.

Napier had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rock defends it easily.

Rock decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Nick Rock is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Rock closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Napier to the mat! Napier manages to get full guard.

Napier wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Rock is now in half guard.

Jack Napier has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Rock is trying to control. Napier wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Rock is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Napier sees it coming and defends easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nick Rock showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Rock has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
