PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zeus Megadon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lyoto Machida (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Machida has chosen Bleed it out - Linkin Park as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Lyoto Machida will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Zeus Megadon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Lyoto Machida!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Daniel Cesar and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Machida gets the takedown into side control.
Megadon sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Megadon is trying to get back to full guard.
Megadon is working hard here to advance position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Machida counters with a nice uppercut.

Machida throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Megadon.

Machida really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Megadon. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Machida misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Megadon seems a little lost for a moment, as Machida dominates the positioning.

A punch lands to the side of Megadon 's head but he takes it in his stride.

Machida shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Machida takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Let's hope that Machida has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Megadon is bucking up trying to escape but Machida cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Megadon is looking to improve his position but Machida isn't that keen on the idea.

Machida shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Megadon is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Machida's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Megadon tries to escape but Machida has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Machida is looking to control Megadon but Megadon is wriggling around and keeping busy.
Machida is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

Despite being in the dominant position, Lyoto Machida just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Machida closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Megadon did well to prevent Machida getting side control.
Megadon wants to improve his position but Machida is controlling well.

Machida is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Megadon has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Megadon is wriggling around trying to escape.
Machida lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Megadon hang on?

Machida avoids the attempt from Megadon to control.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Machida looking to control and managing it successfully.
Megadon tries to hold on but Machida pushes him away.
Megadon is squirming around, avoiding Machida's attempts to control the action.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Machida tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lyoto Machida showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Machida is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Machida jumps guard but Megadon stands there with Machida around his waist. Machida gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Machida gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Machida got a little sloppy there for a moment and Megadon has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Machida has managed to get both his arms back between Megadon's legs - danger averted.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Machida controls from within his opponent's guard.

Machida wants to stand but Megadon has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Machida tries to free his leg and advance position but Megadon is retaining full guard.
Megadon looking to hit a scissor sweep but Machida is one step ahead there.

Megadon escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Machida gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Machida is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Machida plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Machida lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
A combination from Machida does no damage.
Machida lands a glancing blow to the side of Megadon's head.
Machida lands a jab-cross combination.

Machida has Megadon up against the cage in a clinch.

Machida has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Megadon regains guard immediately.
Machida postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Megadon is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Machida defends well.
Machida stays in close to Megadon's body and controls the position.

Machida avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Megadon looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Machida not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Machida wants to lay and pray for a moment but Megadon keeps working.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Machida is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lyoto Machida comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Machida has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
