PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jameer Paul (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Craig Sutherland (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paul comes to the cage accompanied by Dancing With Wolves-Wu Tang Clan. Jameer Paul had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 206.3lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Craig Sutherland is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jameer Paul!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Craig Sutherland!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Robert Douchet and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Paul shoots in looking for a takedown. Sutherland tries to sprawl out of it but Paul keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sutherland manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Paul looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Sutherland throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Sutherland tries to clinch up but Paul circles away and keeps his distance.
Paul shoots in looking for a takedown. Sutherland tries to sprawl out of it but Paul keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sutherland manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Jameer Paul seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Paul on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Paul looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jameer Paul. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nice straight punches there by Sutherland. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Sutherland.


Paul is rocked!


It looks like Jameer Paul has been cut.
Paul falls off balance throwing a combination

and Sutherland moves into the clinch.
Oh Paul is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Paul is fighting off a takedown attempt but Sutherland is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Paul to the mat. Paul regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Paul wants to improve his position but instead Sutherland has moved into half guard.
Paul seems to have got his legs back now.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sutherland is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
Sutherland is nestled in close to Paul, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Paul has hold of Sutherland's hands but Sutherland slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Paul misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Paul is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Sutherland jumps into side control!

Sutherland has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Paul throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Sutherland counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Sutherland.

Paul breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Paul misses with a double jab
and Sutherland counters with a nice low kick that buckles Paul's knee momentarily.
Sutherland swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Paul shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Sutherland as he jumps to the side.
Sutherland throws a nice looking combination but Paul bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Sutherland misses with a low kick.
Paul fails to land the takedown.
Paul throws a left and a right that both miss

and Sutherland holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Sutherland breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Paul throws a combination that misses
and Sutherland connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
No luck for Sutherland with that takedown attempt.

Paul scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Sutherland takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Sutherland wants to get back to his feet but Paul drags him back down.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Paul lands an elbow.

Sutherland has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Sutherland manages to get to full guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Paul advances to half guard.
Sutherland makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Sutherland.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Sutherland can do anything to dispel that myth.

Sutherland has momentary wrist control but Paul slips an elbow through the middle.

Paul is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Paul won't allow Sutherland to get back to his feet.
Paul is working Sutherland over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Sutherland manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Paul manages to get himself to full guard.
Sutherland stands up over Paul, holding on to his feet. Sutherland throws the legs to one side and dives in with a huge shot that lands flush on the chin! Paul is out cold! Sutherland lands a couple more shots and the ref tackles him out of the way! What a brutal finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:02 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Craig Sutherland!
